Republic

Local veterans are extending their hand to other area veterans. A handful of Republic veterans have started a group called “Vets Help Vets.” Group members will get together for support and to talk about issues, not necessarily just those relating to the military. Grant County

Moses Lake

Longtime City Councilman Wayne Rimple may have to resign his position. A recent update to an old state law may force him off the council due to conflict of interest. The law prohibits towns of more than 10,000 population from doing business with any company in which a council member has financial interest. Rimple owns Moses Lake Steel and Faber Industrial Supply. Rimple’s fate is expected to be announced at the next council meeting.

Elman Scharff isn’t satisfied with raising cattle. The local rancher has decided to add a herd of eland to his ranch. Eland are the largest breed of antelope in Africa. Scharff says there is little difference between cattle and eland in the way they’re raised and the meat is tasty.

Pend Oreille County

The Pend Oreille Library District is holding a preteen writing contest for kids 8-12, with the theme “When I wish upon a star …” Short stories, poetry or essays are all acceptable, and should be submitted to the library by Nov. 30. Deer Park High School senior Laurie Miller has been named a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship program. Miller’s qualification was based on her PSAT score. Her next step is to complete an application that includes her grade-point average, activities, counselor’s recommendation and a personal essay. Finalists will be announced next spring.

Stevens County

Colville

Steve Heater was recently selected as director of the Washington State Fair Association. Local residents know him best as the Northeast Washington Fair manager, but under either title, Heater is happy. He will oversee 44 member fairs, troubleshoot financial issues and see how fairs can be made more viable in the next century.

Two pre-holiday events are planned Saturday. The American Legion is holding its annual crafts fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Also, New Morning Glass Studio’s open house is slated for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Owners Jack Doebler and Mary Kernan welcome the public to view a variety of handmade items, enjoy glass-blowing demonstrations, refreshments and a drawing. Garfield Chamber of Commerce members are also accepting orders for “Garfield’s Culinary Treasures,” a cookbook with more than 170 recipes from local kitchens. The Paul Bunyan Days committee is working to raise funds for the millennium celebration fireworks display. The committee will sponsor an evening breakfast feed, auction and dance Saturday at the Eagles. The breakfast feed will be served 5-7 p.m. with the auction at 7 p.m. and music at 9 p.m.

Bonner County

Sandpoint

The Bonner County Planning and Zoning Commission has endorsed a plan to implement a $25 fee for the Bonner County Planning Department to review applications for family exemptions from platting. County commissioners proposed the fee to defray the cost of taxpayers for the application review. Currently no fee is charged for family exemption applications, which exempt family property splits from the filing of subdivision maps.

Boundary County

Bonners Ferry

For the past two years, traffic on Forest Service Road 435, also known as Deer Ridge Road, has been the target of “tackers” who’ve regularly strewn nails along a 500-foot stretch, causing flat tires. District Ranger Elaine Zieroth and Forest Service enforcement officer Lee Taylor are investigating the matter.

Latah County

Moscow

The Latah County Historical Society is holding its major fund-raiser, the traditional annual harvest dinner Nov. 14 at Moscow Junior High school cafeteria from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Moscow’s popular accordionist, Clarence Johnson, will play old-time favorites. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children from 6-12 and free for children under six. Call 882-1004 for more information.

The Mullan School Board Monday decided to have several classrooms in the elementary school wired to accept new computers. The district is planning to install new computers this year and because of the amount of electricity that will be used, rooms need to be wired to safely power the computers.

A second Libby School Board member has resigned. Bill Mann has resigned from the board to move closer to family in California.
