A Fairy-Tale Start To 54Th Season Spokane Children’S Theatre Opens With ‘Hansel And Gretel’

The Spokane Children’s Theatre opens its 54th season with a musical version of the classic fairy tale, “Hansel and Gretel.”

The music will be from the well-known operetta, and music director Kasey Graham has adapted the music for children’s voices. The director is Kashana Cox.

The show runs Saturday, Sunday and Oct. 16, 17, 18, 23, 24 and 30. Curtain times are 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays, and 7 p.m. on Sundays and Mondays.

All shows are at the Spokane Civic Theatre, N. 1020 Howard. Tickets are $3.50 each, available only by phone in advance, 328-4886. Call between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.

`Inherit the Wind’

The Reading Stage, the Spokane Civic Theatre’s reader’s theater series, presents the classic courtroom drama, “Inherit the Wind,” by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee on Sunday.

This 1955 play is based on the 1925 Scopes “Monkey” trial, about the teaching of evolution. The characters’ names have been changed — the lead attorneys are named Matthew Harrison and Henry Drummond, instead of William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow. But the story closely follows the circus-like events of the real trial.

The issues at stake in the play have changed surprisingly little since 1925. The play was a sensation on Broadway, starring Paul Muni, Ed Begley and Tony Randall.

The Reading Stage production features Civic executive director John G. Phillips and Ed Cornachio in the two lead roles. The director is Norman Gano.

Tickets are $5, available at the door only on the night of performance. Showtime is 7 p.m. Sunday in the Firth Chew Studio Theatre, in the basement of the Spokane Civic Theatre, 1020 N. Howard.
