Upstart Medical Lake Humbled By Lakeside
Medical Lake has been the sur- prise team in Great Northern League volleyball this season.
But Lakeside has been the leader, and the Eagles showed why on Thursday night with their response to another Medical Lake surprise.
Jen Barcus had 26 kills and eight blocked shots to guide the Eagles (7-0) to an 8-15, 15-3, 15-8, 15-1 comeback win at Medical Lake.
Nicole Jones had nine kills for the Cardinals, who are 4-3 after finishing 2-12 in the GNL last year.
Also in the GNL, Debbie Curry had nine kills and Mary Rose seven digs in Pullman’s 3-0 win at Deer Park. The Greyhounds improved to 6-1… . Dess Wendle totaled 18 kills and five blocks to lead Newport (1-6) to a 17-15, 15-11, 12-15, 6-15, 15-12 win at Chewelah (3-4). Newport trailed 8-2 in the final game. Kassi White and Pam Purser combined for 35 kills for Chewelah.
Angie Domrese finished with 12 kills, 10 digs and three blocks, and North Central rallied for a 10-15, 15-6, 15-9, 15-12 non-league win at University. NC defeated U-Hi 3-0 in a Sept. 21 Greater Spokane League match.
Rochelle Ruen had seven aces and three blocks, and Megan Lippi added five aces as Sandpoint (7-0) took a big step toward the Border League title with a 15-8, 15-1 win over visiting Moscow (6-1).
Girls soccer
Casey Joyner’s goal on a penalty kick completed Coeur d’Alene’s 3-1 win over visiting Cheney (5-3) in the Border League. CdA (12-0-2, 8-0) is two wins away from a perfect league season… . Heidi Lyman had a hand in every goal as West Valley (2-3-1) defeated visiting Lewiston 3-2. Lyman assisted the tiebreaking goal and scored an insurance goal at 62:30. … Jesy Rosholt scored the final goal in Sandpoint’s 2-0 win at Post Falls (2-4-1). The Bulldogs (4-2) moved up to fourth place, ahead of Cheney.
Jamie Rizzuto had three goals within a span of 11 minutes in the second half, and visiting Riverside (6-0) defeated Lakeside 3-0 to stay atop the Great Northern League. Defenders Danielle Renz, Shelly Lucas and Leah Shearer helped blank the third-place Eagles (3-3)… . Also in the league, Sara Sheridan’s goal, her 13th in the last seven matches, lifted second-place Pullman (5-1) to a 1-0 win at Medical Lake… . Katie Moat scored on a free kick midway through the second half, lifting Chewelah to a 1-0 win at Deer Park.
