A Look Back At The Past Week On Wall Street
What’s hot
Some familiar technology leaders led the charge this week. Yahoo! shares soared $14 to $190.25 Thursday as the popular Internet search engine company wowed Wall Street with its quarterly earnings. Investors cheered all week as the stock closed Friday at $192.13 on Nasdaq. Seattle-based Amazon.com shares jumped $4.88 to $87.31 Thursday on the Nasdaq as prospects seemed to brighten for a big “e-tailing” holiday season for the company. The stock gained nearly $2 more Friday, closing at $89.25.
What’s not
There was little joy in toyland Monday as Mattel shares plummeted $5 to $11.63, following reports that earnings would fall 55 percent below analysts’ estimates and revenues would drop. The stock closed down 50 cents Friday at $11.81 on the New York Stock Exchange. Amid continued concerns about memory chip prices following the Taiwan earthquakes, shares of Boise-based Micron Technology fell $7.12 Thursday to $69.63 on the NYSE. Micron closed the week at $69.06. Big Blue also was singing the blues. IBM said it might cut 10 percent of its work force from the money-losing personal computer division. Shares dropped $2.81 to $116.38 Monday on NYSE and closed down $2.88 Friday at $113.50.
