March against racism

Churches Against Racism will sponsor the “Walk Against Hate” on Sunday as a response to recent acts of violence across the country - and ongoing racism in the Inland Northwest.

The event will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a welcome at Temple Beth Shalom, 1322 E. 30th. Walkers will travel a two-mile route down Grand Boulevard to the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th.

A short interfaith prayer service at the cathedral will follow the walk. Transportation will be provided for the return trip to the temple.

Concert

The Christian group Avalon will perform in concert at 7 tonight at Living Faith Fellowship in Pullman, along with Anointed and Nichole Nordeman.

The church is located at 1035 S. Grand.

Tickets are $18 at the door.

St. Stephen’s Lecture

Norvene Vest, an oblate at St. Andrew’s Benedictine in California, will be the featured speaker for the annual St. Stephen’s Lecture Series Oct. 22 and 23 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 5720 S. Perry. Registration deadline is Thursday.

Vest has a master of theology degree in Christian formation from Fuller Seminary. She has written books on the Benedictine practices of silence, prayer and reading for spiritual growth, including “Friend of the Soul” and “No Moment too Small.”

As an oblate, she lives in a monastery without taking vows.

Vest’s first lecture will cover “Work: Friend or Foe of the Human Spirit” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at Riverpoint Auditorium, 668 N. Riverpoint Blvd. At 7 p.m. Oct. 23, she will address “Impossible Task: Accepting Obedience for the Sake of Freedom” at St. Stephen’s.

She will also lead a retreat from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at the church. Topics will include “Tender Competence: A Way of Working Whole” and “Is Desire Spiritually Reliable?” The retreat is limited to 50 participants.

Evening lectures are $20 each, and the retreat is $50.

Near death lecture

Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard, will host a lecture by Kimberly Sharp today at noon. She is the author of “After the Light: The Spiritual Path to Purpose” and is the founder of the Seattle International Association of Near Death Studies. Her visit is sponsored by the Spokane International Association for Near Death Studies. Admission is $5 at the door. (624-9729)

`Sacred Awakening’

The Spokane Spiritual Center will host guest speaker Christopher Love during two events next weekend. He will lead a workshop titled “The Sacred Awakening” from 1 to 3 p.m. next Saturday at the center, 1445 N. Argonne Road. The cost is $25, which includes his book “The Sacred Path of Awakening.”

There will also be “Satsang with Christopher” on Sunday, Oct. 17, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the center. Satsang is a Sanskrit word meaning “truth community.”

The event will begin with a 20-minute silent meditation. Love will also answer questions.

The cost is $10.

Icon’s schedule

The Holy Trinity Icon will travel throughout the Roman Catholic Diocese of Spokane until June 2000, cumulating with a Mass on Pentecost. The icon was created by Benedictine Brother Claude Lane, formerly from Spokane and now of Mount Angel Abbey in Oregon.

Upcoming appearances of the icon include: St. Charles, 4515 N. Alberta, Sunday; the parishes of Wellpinit, West End and Ford, Oct. 17; St. Michael Mission in Inchelium, Wash., Oct. 24; St. Francis Xavier, 545 E. Providence, Oct. 31; Mary Queen, 3423 E. Carlisle, Nov. 7; St. Patrick’s, 5021 N. Nelson, Nov. 14; St. Ann’s, 2120 E. First, Nov. 14; and Sacred Heart, 219 E. Rockwood Blvd., Nov. 28.

Hip hop to God

David Scherer is bringing his unique version of hip hop outreach to Spokane during a special performance Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at the Met.

Scherer was born in Spokane and has been break dancing since age 5. His performance combines dance, spiritually oriented music and a message aimed at youth.

He now serves as a youth minister at the largest Lutheran church in the country, located in Minnesota.

Tickets: $5.
