Santa Clara Edges Gu

Substitute midfielder Brett Davis scored from 20 yards in the closing moments Friday night, lifting No.1-ranked Santa Clara to a 1-0 win over Gonzaga in a West Coast Conference men’s soccer match at Santa Clara, Calif.

Santa Clara (11-0) is ranked No. 1 by SoccerTimes and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The Broncos hadn’t been top-ranked since 1991.

The winning goal was set up by a direct free kick. Midfielder Sean-Michael Callahan sent the pass into the middle of the field.

The Zags (6-5-2) defeated then-No. 1-ranked Creighton 1-0 two weeks ago.

The Broncos outshot GU 18-9. GU received four yellow cards in the match, Santa Clara two.

* Jeff Rines scored at 82 minutes, allowing Bellevue Community College to tie visiting Community Colleges of Spokane 1-1 on a muddy field.

CCS just missed on a scoring chance at 72 minutes, then cashed in 10 minutes later when Joey McAllister fed Trevor Erickson for a 1-0 lead.

CCS (7-0-2), which has outscored rivals 45-5, leads the Northeast Division of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges. Bellevue (4-2-3) is in fifth place in the 10-team division.

Volleyball

Lisa Rutledge, Marisa DeLee and Raelene Elam combined for 38 kills as 18th-ranked Arizona (11-4, 5-2) defeated Washington State 3-0 in a Pacific-10 Conference match at Tucson, Ariz.

Arizona scored the first nine points of the match. LaToya Harris had 11 kills and Joy Sperry 13 digs for the Cougars (7-7, 2-5). WSU outside hitter Missy Blackshire, of Ferris High, didn’t make the trip. WSU declined to explain her absence.

* Heather Dill finished with 14 digs and 12 kills to lead Saint Mary’s (3-9, 1-2) to a 3-0 win at Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference.

The Gaels led the second game 9-0, fell behind 14-12, then scored four consecutive points. Seraina Bitzi of the Bulldogs (4-12, 0-3) had a season-high 11 kills and 14 digs.

* Angel Fairbanks had 29 kills as Community Colleges of Spokane (23-6) was 4-0, without dropping a game, to open its Crossover Tournament at Spokane Falls CC.

Cassie Beyer added 85 assists and three aces, and Kortney Stewart had seven aces for the Sasquatch. CCS opens today’s playoffs against Mt. Hood, which finished second in its pool, behind Columbia Basin.

* Western Baptist defeated Whitworth 3-1 in a non-conference match at Salem, Ore.

Whitworth (6-10) had leads in three of the four games. The Pirates won the second game 15-10, aided by three Abby Hornstein aces after a 10-all tie.

Golf

Tim Hval and Matt Allen from the host club fired a 9-under-par 63 to win the Pacific Northwest PGA Pro-Am Championship at Bandon Dunes in Bandon, Ore.

Hval/Allen finished at 129, two strokes ahead of three teams. In fifth place, at 133, was the Spokane-area team of Mark Gardner and Grant Holcomb. Seven teams were at 135, including locals Ron Barker and Bob Christensen, and Steve and Corey Prugh.
