Timberlake’S Jr./Sr. High Honors School’S First Principal Football Field Named In Memory Of Van Tuinstra

Timberlake Junior/Senior High is naming its football field in memory of the school’s first principal.

A dedication ceremony for Van Tuinstra Memorial Field will be conducted on Friday at 6:40 p.m., before the football game with St. Maries. Tuinstra served as principal when the school opened in the fall of 1998. He died of illness before completing the year.

Tuinstra had been with the Lakeland School District as teacher, coach and administrator for more than 18 years. A plaque will be presented to Karen Tuinstra in her husband’s memory. A bronze plaque will be placed on the concession stand at the field, in memory of Tuinstra.

A portrait of Tuinstra also will be presented to the district. The painting was given to Lakeland by the Region I secondary principals (from Bonners Ferry to Plummer). It will be placed at Timberlake. A sign, “Tiger Den,” also will be painted in the Timberlake gymnasium, a term Tuinstra coined for the new gym.

In other school distict news

Four Mountain View Alternative High School students are studying at Riverbend Professional/ Technical Academy at the North Idaho College Training Center in Post Falls.

Joe (Wayne) Wachter and Chris Wanner are in the computer and network systems technology class. Both will graduate at the end of this school year. Taking part in the Health Services Technology class are Samantha Eldredge and Misty Pollard. Pollard will graduate at the end of the third quarter, and Eldredge graduates in mid-2000.

The academy offers advanced technical and specialized courses that integrate career and academic preparation. It is designed to provide students with real-life learning opportunities through programs not already offered in area high schools.

Students also benefit from enhanced self-worth and an increased marketability after graduation.

Athol Elementary sixth-graders went on a field trip to the Ross Point Challenge Course. The five-hour course incorporated a variety of outdoor activities designed to help students develop social skills and help them develop a more positive outlook.

In their classrooms, the students have continued to build on their knowledge, refining their respect for each other, listening to one another, and coming up with positive solutions to solving problems.

Travis VanCaster, a senior at Lakeland High School, has been named a commended student in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

VanCaster demonstrated outstanding academic potential by his high performance in competitive national merit program testing.

New staff members at Garwood Elementary include: Cinde Collins, resource teacher; Curlene Moses, secretary; and Geri Quillin, Leah McCullough and Marlo Bischoff, aides for noon duty and resource room.

A guest performer from Texas at an assembly at Garwood Elementary incorporated safety messages while using his gift of musical lyrics to entertain the students. The assembly was held for all students on Sept. 27.

Cameron Hendewerk, a senior at Timberlake High School, recently enlisted in the Army. Cameron’s older brother, Brandon, a 1999 graduate from Lakeland High, also joined the Army.

Brandon is at basic training at Fort Sill, Okla. Cameron will leave for basic training at Fort Knox, Ky., on June 14 and will be stationed in Europe after basic training.

The Hendewerk brothers are the sons of Bernard and Carmen Hendewerk of Rathdrum.
