Mead Captures Classic With Win Over Ferris
Mead and Ferris decided not to wait until Thursday for their volleyball showdown.
Mead defeated Ferris 15-6, 16-14 Saturday night at North Central to claim the championship of the sixth Crossover Classic volleyball tournament.
Mead and Ferris breezed through the 40-team field on what was a stellar day for the GSL. In the semifinals, Mead defeated Puyallup, the top-ranked 4A team in the state coaches poll, and Ferris knocked off 3A second-ranked Fife.
The Greater Spokane League rivals are set to play Thursday at Ferris. Mead (5-1) is the only team to defeat Ferris (6-0) in the Saxons’ last 65 GSL matches. Both teams are chasing Shadle Park (7-0) for the league title.
Mead placed third at the 1998 Crossover, behind champion Sandpoint and Puyallup. Sandpoint didn’t compete this year because it didn’t send in an application on time.
Shadle defeated Class 1A Colfax in the match for fifth and sixth places at NC. Rogers placed eighth, also in a contest at NC.
In matches at Gonzaga Prep, NC finished 12th, Lewis and Clark 13th and Pullman 16th.
Matches for places 17-40 occurred at LC, Shadle and Ferris.
Nicole Jones and Marissa Greene combined for 15 kills in Medical Lake’s 3-1 win over visiting Deer Park in the Great Northern League. Leslie Mitchell of the Cardinals (5-3) attempted jump serves for the first time in a game situation, and had four aces.
Cross country
Mead’s boys and girls were team champions, and East Valley junior Melanie Frostad won the girls race at the Richland Invitational. Mead’s boys scored 103 points, 39 less than runner-up Oregon City, to top the 31-team boys field. Mead’s Chris Fayant (15 minutes, 57 seconds for 5,000 meters) placed second overall. Mead’s Bryan Becherini and Greg Nuzman were flight winners. Mead’s girls topped Eastmont 156-174 for the title among 20 teams. Mead’s Amy Toliver (19:42) placed fourth overall, but 55 seconds behind Frostad. Sixth-place Alayna Hagney guided Lewis and Clark’s girls to third place. LC’s boys placed sixth, led by 11th-place Colin Quinn-Hurst.
Robin Bell and Adrienne Isgrigg finished 1-2 to lead Gonzaga Prep to the girls team title at Prep’s 15th annual Bullpup Invitational at Finch Arboretum. Bell completed the 5,000 meters in 20 minutes, 11 seconds, 16 seconds before Isgrigg. Prep topped runner-up Lake City 82-123. Samantha Clarke of St. George’s (20:32) placed third. University outran North Central 54-82 for the boys title. Winner Forest Braden of Bonners Ferry (16:29) outkicked NC’s Erick Olson by 7 seconds.
Girls soccer
Ashley Troxel totaled one goal and two assists to lead Lake City (11-1-1, 8-1) to an 8-0 win over visiting West Valley in the Border League. Katie Quinn added two goals for the Timberwolves, who are right behind Coeur d’Alene (8-0) in the standings… . Also in the league, Jillian Sturm’s 35-yard goal completed Sandpoint’s 2-0 win over visiting Moscow (11-4-1, 6-2). Stacy Bolstad also scored for the Bulldogs (5-2 BL), on a crossing pass… . Shelby Phelps’ first-half goal on a penalty kick started Post Falls (3-4-1 BL) toward a 3-0 win over visiting Colville.
Football
Hanford (4-1) defeated visiting Lakeside 34-7 in a non-league game. The Eagles are 3-2… . Pomeroy (3-2, 2-0) defeated visiting St. John-Endicott 23-12 in the Southeast B-11. SJE is 0-5, 0-3. The game had been postponed from Friday, when a power outage hit Pomeroy.
Junior hockey
Keith Tobiason scored twice for Spokane, but the Braves dropped a 5-2 KIHJL decision to Golden at the Arena. Spokane’s record fell to 3-4 while Golden improved to 2-7.
