New ‘Yellow Submarine’ Includes More Songs

The Beatles “Yellow Submarine” Capitol, *** 1/2

Thirty-one years after the fact, Capitol Records has released a “Yellow Submarine” soundtrack that actually includes all the songs heard in the movie.

Gone, however, is the orchestral music arranged by Beatles producer George Martin that was on side two of the original LP, prompting Capitol to call this release a “songtrack.”

The original soundtrack featured six Beatles songs; the “songtrack” has nine more tunes, including “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” “Love You To,” “Nowhere Man” and “Eleanor Rigby.”

The result is a latter-day Beatles greatest-hits package that has been digitally remixed in surround sound, which sounds good even if you don’t have surround sound.

The 17-second slice of guitar feedback that opens “It’s All Too Much” rings out like the devil went down to Liverpool, preceded of course by John Lennon’s pleasant aside, “To your mother!” Which, if you think about it, was a strange way to end a movie about love and peace.

And thanks to digital technology, two minutes into the title track, it sounds more than ever as though Ringo is singing “slubmarine.”
