St. Maries, Lakeland Earn Byes In District Tourney

Shena Charles finished with 11 kills Saturday to help St. Maries (20-3, 7-0 Intermountain League) to a 2-0 volleyball win over visiting Priest River.

The Lumberjacks’ Essie Nelson added six kills, and combined with Melissa Megers to serve 19 of 19, with two aces apiece.

St. Maries clinched a bye to the opening round of the A-2 District I Tournament.

Also in the IML, Anika Duvall totaled 25 assists and 22 digs to lead second-place Lakeland (7-1) to a 15-6, 13-15, 15-4 win over visiting Kellogg. Desirae Crocker added 11 kills, Jessica Austad five aces for Lakeland, which also clinched an opening-round district bye.

Coeur d’Alene finished 1-2 in its pool at Lewis and Clark High during the 40-team Crossover Classic at five Spokane sites.

The Vikings defeated Kentridge 15-11, 15-6, 15-13, but lost to Rogers and Pullman. CdA stayed at LC for afternoon and night matches to determine places 17-24.

Defending champion Sandpoint didn’t compete because it didn’t send in entry forms on time, according to one Crossover organizer.

Rose Sauer had two kills to complete the match, and Newport defeated Timberlake 3-0 in a non-leaguer. Newport won the final game 16-14 after trailing 10-4.

Cross country

Forest Braden of Bonners Ferry won the 15th annual Bullpup Invitational, completing the 5,000-meter Finch Arboretum course in 16 minutes, 29 seconds.

Lake City placed second among 11 girls teams. Rachel Bates was the top Timberwolves runner, finishing 10th in 21:13.

Top times for Idaho boys runners included Travis Newby, Coeur d’Alene, fifth, 16:55; Ethan Anyan, Post Falls, seventh, 17:08; and Isaac Zentner, Sandpoint, 13th, 17:22. For girls, it was Brenna Giesen, CdA, fourth, 20:33; and Carrie Paulitz, PF, 12th, 21:16.

Girls soccer

Ashley Troxel totaled one goal and two assists to lead Lake City (11-1-1, 8-1) to an 8-0 win over visiting West Valley in the Border League. Katie Quinn added two goals for the Timberwolves, who are right behind Coeur d’Alene (8-0) in the standings… . Also in the league, Jillian Sturm’s 35-yard goal completed Sandpoint’s 2-0 win over visiting Moscow (11-4-1, 6-2). Stacy Bolstad also scored for the Bulldogs (5-2 BL), on a crossing pass… . Becky Thompson’s first-half goal on a penalty kick started Post Falls (3-4-1 BL) toward a 3-0 win over visiting Colville. Thompson’s goal was set up when Carmi Eberle was tripped up by an Indians defender.

Katie Harkins tied the match at 2 with a breakaway goal, then was one of four scorers during a shootout to lift Pullman to a 3-2 non-league win over Lewiston (5-8).

Boys soccer

Sandpoint moved a step closer to the North Idaho League title with a 5-0 win at Lewiston. The Bulldogs (11-1-2, 8-0-2) have tough matches left next week with second-place Coeur d’Alene and third-place Moscow. The match was scoreless for 36 minutes… . Also in the league, Lake City (7-6, 6-4) defeated Lakeland 2-0 at Rathdrum.

Swimming

Sandpoint’s boys and Coeur d’Alene’s girls were winners in dual matches at Sandpoint West Athletic Club.
