Kaiser And Steelworkers Mum On Labor Negotiations

Chief negotiators for Kaiser Aluminum Corp. and the United Steelworkers of America met in Chicago on Thursday to discuss a return to full negotiations.

David Foster of the Steelworkers and Jeremy Sherman, a Chicago attorney representing Kaiser, led the discussion. Neither side talked about how the meeting progressed. Talks were to continue today.

The full bargaining groups, including the presidents from the five locked-out union locals, last met in California in August. When those meetings broke, both sides said there had been little progress.

The Steelworkers, including 2,100 in Spokane, went on strike when their labor agreement expired on Sept. 30, 1998. The strike became a lockout in January when Kaiser refused the union’s offer to return under the terms of the old contract until a new agreement could be reached.
