Charles Havens Spokane
Memorial service for Charles D. Havens, 86, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at North Hill Christian Church. Private burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Havens died Tuesday.
He graduated from North Central High School in 1931, and began grinding lenses for Jones Optical in 1933.
In 1939 he was a clerk at Coleman’s Grocery and in 1940 he worked as an optician for American Optical.
He served in the Army during World War II.
He later worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and retired in 1973.
Mr. Havens married Lucille Norris in 1944; she died in 1991.
Mr. Havens was a member and former deacon of North Hill Christian Church. He was also a member of Project Joy Senior Orchestra, where he was award the Marian Herzer Award in 1991. Other memberships include the National Association of Letter Carriers, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and Disabled American Veterans.
He was a volunteer at the Spokane Food Bank and Meals on Wheels. He also volunteered through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
Survivors include a daughter, Laurel Havens, and two brothers, Daniel and Donald Havens, all of Spokane.
Memorial contributions may be made to the North Hill Christian Church or to Allegro.
Paul Rhodes Mead
Memorial service for Paul S. Rhodes, 39, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Wake will be held at 5 p.m. at the family home. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Rhodes, who was born in Colville, Wash., died Tuesday.
He graduated from Colville High School and later graduated from the School of Forestry at Washington State University in 1982.
Mr. Rhodes worked as a logger and a forester for the timber industry.
He moved to Mead eight years ago and owned Forestland Management Inc.
Mr. Rhodes was a volunteer fireman for Fire Station 48 and the Spokane County Fire Department No. 4.
Survivors include his wife of seven years, Dianne; three stepchildren, Andrea Eliassen of Mead, Lisa Boyette of Spokane and Chris Boyette of Corvallis, Ore.; his parents, Raleigh and Margery Rhodes of Spokane; a brother, John Rhodes of Spokane; and three granddaughters.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or the American Cancer Society.
Leonard Johnson Spokane
Private funeral service will be held for Leonard R. Johnson, 72. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Johnson, who was born in St. Maries, died Tuesday. He was a 40-year Spokane resident.
He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education from Washington State University and taught at Rogers High School for 29 years. He retired in 1985.
He was a member of the Woodworkers Guild.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Charlotte; three daughters, Laura Johnson of Coeur d’Alene, Marilyn Jochim of Issaquah, Wash., and Carol Weisbeck of Enumclaw, Wash.; a brother, Lloyd Johnson of Sandpoint; five sisters, Elva Johnson of Spokane, Lillian Turnquist of Sandpoint, Ruby Heuppchin of Newport, Wash., Mildred Wrinkle of Milton Freewater, Ore. and Delma Bethea of Radford, Va.; and four grandchildren.

Gordon Gardner Sr. Oakesdale, Wash.
Memorial service for Gordon Eugene Gardner Sr., 72, will be at 1 p.m. today at the Oakesdale Baptist Church. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Gardner, who was born in Jamestown, N.D., died Monday.
His family moved to Minnesota when he was 6 years old and in 1939 they moved to Snohomish, Wash.
He served in the Army from 1945 to 1947 and was stationed in the Philippines.
Mr. Gardner married Helen Robinson in 1946; they later divorced.
After his military service, he returned to Snohomish and drove trucks and worked in the shipyards.
In 1955 his family moved to Ellensburg and he owned and operated an auto salvage business.
He moved to Oakesdale in 1958. He served for a short time as the town marshal before working at Gardner and Smith Fertilizer Company.
Mr. Gardner later owned and operated Gordon’s Service Station and Gardner Oil Company, both in Oakesdale. He sold the service station to his sons.
In 1986 he worked as the head van driver for the Whitman County Council on Aging.
In 1971 he married LaVelle McGee.
He was a member of the Oakesdale City Council, where he served for 19 years. He was also a member of the Oakesdale Jaycees, the Odd Fellows Lodge, the Colfax Eagles Lodge and the Oakesdale Historical Society.
Mr. Gardner was a volunteer for the fire department for 27 years.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Gordon Jr., Larry and John Gardner, all of Oakesdale; a daughter, Carol Pittman of Oakesdale; a stepson, Larry McGree of Moscow, Idaho; a stepdaughter, Lori McGee of Spokane; a brother, Lyle Gardner of Oakesdale; five sisters, Margaret Bjork of Spokane, Joyce Hamilton of Hamilton, Wash., Jean Heinman of Winthrop, Wash. and Vi Carr and Lu Fagerland, both of Everett; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Lawrence `Dev’ Devereaux Spokane
Funeral Mass for Lawrence A. “Dev” Devereaux, 90, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Devereaux died Sunday.
He served in the Army during World War II and married Violet Throop in 1948. She died in 1996.
He owned and operated various taverns in Spokane, including the American Tavern from 1941 to 1951, the Irish Tavern from 1961-1965 and the Carriboo Inn from 1968 to 1969.
In 1969 he began working in real estate sale for Triangle Reality and retired in 1980.
He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Virginia Sandberg Greenacres
Visitation for Virginia L. Sandberg, 69, will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Funeral is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.
A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Sandberg died Tuesday.
She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1947.
Mrs. Sandberg worked as an office manager for Superior Fast Freight from 1969 to 1994.
She was a member of Valley Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Charles; a daughter, Jenise Sandberg of Spokane; two sons, John Sandberg of Spokane and Jeff Sandberg of Wenatchee; her parents, Jack and Dorothy Yaryan of Spokane; four sisters, Eleanor Gandini, Rita Sander and Merylee Peterson, all of Spokane, and Lorraine Filibeck of Sacramento, Calif.; a brother, John Yaryan of Green Bluff; and six grandchildren.

Gail Broweleit Colfax, Wash.
Funeral service for Gail Marie Broweleit, 43, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Calvary Christian Center in Pullman. Burial will be held prior to the service at 12:30 p.m. at the Colfax Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of arrangements.
Miss Broweleit, who was born in Colfax, died Saturday from complications of multiple sclerosis.
She was the Colfax Fair Princess in 1974 and graduated from Colfax High School in 1975.
Miss Broweleit graduated with a degree in special education from Eastern Washington University in 1979.
From 1979 to 1982 she taught kindergarten and remedial reading in Lind, Wash.
She was a member of the Full Gospel Assembly Church in Colfax.
Survivors include her mother, Inez Broweleit of Colfax and a sister, Christine Myers of Spokane.

Marge Kovalon Spokane
Private services will be held for Marge A. Kovalon, 85. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Kovalon, who was born in Chicago, died Tuesday.
She married Frank Kovalon in 1935.
Mrs. Kovalon and her husband moved to Spokane 10 years ago from California.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Celeste ; three grandsons and one great-grandson.
Harold Schmitt Spokane
No services will be held for Harold E. Schmitt, 77, at his request. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A 54-year Spokane resident, Mr. Schmitt died Oct. 8. He was born in Leola, S.D.
He served in the Army with the 13th Infantry during World War II, and worked as a welder for Clark Equipment Trailers.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Mary; a daughter, Janet Miller of Spokane; two brothers and a sister; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Veneta (Huneywell) Hinthorne Spokane
Graveside service for Veneta M. (Huneywell) Hinthorne, 79, will be at 3 p.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A 65-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Hinthorne died Tuesday.
She was born in Chewelah, Wash., and graduated from Rogers High School in 1939.
Mrs. Hinthorne was a homemaker and a member of the Spokane Humane Society.
Survivors include a son, Resse Hinthorne of Othello, Wash.; a brother, Seth Huneywell of Spokane; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Kimberly Utke Spokane
Funeral service for Kimberly Ann Utke, 41, will be at noon today at Bethel Church of the Nazarene. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery.
Mrs. Utke, who was born in Colfax, Wash., died Tuesday.
She graduated from Colfax High School in 1976 and moved to Spokane in 1977.
Mrs. Utke was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Church of the Nazarene, the American Family Association and the Christian Action Committee.
Survivors include her husband, Craig; a daughter, Anastasia Utke at home; her mother, Mildred Shepard of Colfax; and two brothers, Frank White of Colfax and Ivan White of Sunnyside, Wash.

Phyllis (Valentine) Parker Oldtown, Idaho
Funeral service for Phyllis Edith (Valentine) Parker, 79, will be at 11 a.m. today at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Priest River, Idaho.
Mrs. Parker, who was born in Boise, died Wednesday.
She married Patrick Parker in 1960, and worked as a clerk for Lloyd Erich in Newport. She later managed The Pantry Restaurant in Newport.
Shortly after her husband’s death in 1991 she moved from Blanchard, Idaho, to Oldtown.
She was a charter member of the Newport Eagles. She was also a member of the Priest River Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Mrs. Park is survived by a sister, Mary Slane of Shreveport, La.

Dorothy (Hall) Richards Clayton, Wash.

Mrs. Richards, who was born in St. John, Wash., died Wednesday.
She was a four-year Clayton resident and also had lived in Elk.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Fertile Valley Grange in Elk. She was also a member of the Country Homes Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph; four sons, James Hall of Elk, Floyd Hall of Othello, Wash., Travis Hall of Potlatch, Idaho and Jay Hall of Wasilla, Alaska; 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Clara Shock Spokane
Funeral service for Clara Mae Shock, 92, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Shock, who was born in Tacoma, died Sunday.
She married Bert Bagley. He died in 1940.
Mrs. Shock moved to Spokane in 1940 and worked as a waitress at various restaurants.
She later married Forest Shock in 1941; he died in 1961.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Cromwell of Spokane; a sister, Margaret Willms of Florida; four grandsons and numerous great-grandchildren.
