Knights Survive On Penalty Kick

A penalty kick with 2 minutes left in regulation has kept East Valley’s first girls soccer season in the Greater Spokane League alive.

The Knights, who finished in a three-way tie for fourth place, will take on Shadle Park at 3 p.m. today at Mead for seeding into the district tournament after eliminating Mt. Spokane 1-0 Monday.

Senior Jessica Bowen nailed the penalty kick in the 78th minute after the Wildcats were called for a hand ball in the penalty area.

Mt. Spokane had a 21-8 margin in shots in a game that was otherwise evenly contested. The difference likely was East Valley’s sophomore keeper, Tiera Como, who had 10 saves.

EV, Mt. Spokane and Shadle Park had tied for fourth. Shadle won a coin flip Monday for the bye. Today’s winner will place fourth and visit No. 3 Central Valley, while the loser will finish fifth and go to No. 2 Ferris when district play begins Wednesday.

First-place Mead is idle until a week from today when it will entertain the district tournament winner for seeding into state play.

Because the playoffs for fourth and fifth seeding are part of the postseason, GSL officials remind fans that admission will be charged, as it will be for the district playoffs.

College men’s soccer

Forward Brian Ching, who scored three goals and had an assist in Gonzaga’s two wins last week, earned West Coast Conference player of the week honors. Ching, a junior from Haleiwa, Hawaii, scored two goals, including the winner, in Gonzaga’s 4-2 victory over No. 4 San Diego on Friday. Ching, who had not scored against a Division I opponent in a month, scored his ninth goal of the season Sunday in Gonzaga’s 3-2 overtime win over Loyola Marymount.

High school basketball

The 1999-2000 Idaho state high school rules clinic will be tonight at Coeur d’Alene High School.

Registration will be from 6 to 6:45 at the school’s cafeteria. The clinic will begin at 7.

Season registration will also take place for new and veteran officials.

North Idaho College’s season gets started this week.

The annual Red-Gray intrasquad match is Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Gonzaga Prep. The alumni match is scheduled for Friday at 7:30 at NIC’s Christianson Gym.
