Liberty’S End

The last of the Liberty Trees, 13 trees planted before the revolt of America’s colonies, was slowly cut up Monday after being weakened by disease and wind damage from Hurricane Floyd. The 400-year-old tulip poplar stood on the campus of St. John’s college in Annapolis, Md. Prior to the Revolutionary War, Liberty Trees were meeting places for chapters of the Sons of Liberty.
