Car Wrecks Kill Two In Stevens County

From Staff Reports

Two people died Monday in separate car wrecks in Stevens County, the Washington State Patrol reported.

The first crash occurred about 5:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 395 near the town of Arden.

Troopers said Robert Carrigan was driving his 1984 Jeep north on Highway 395 when he ran head-on into a southbound Mazda being driven by Joshua Bowyer.

Carrigan, 42, was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, where he died of massive head and internal injuries. Troopers weren’t sure if he had been wearing a seat belt.

Bowyer, 22, suffered two broken legs and was taken to Mount Carmel Hospital in Colville. He was wearing his seat belt, troopers said.

The second crash occurred about 6:40 p.m. on state Highway 25 near the town of Marcus.

Troopers said 17-year-old Michael Murphy was driving his 1984 Honda Accord north with his younger brother in the car when he lost control in a curve.

The car crossed the road, hit a guard rail, careened back across the pavement and went into a ditch, the State Patrol reported.

Murphy, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered bumps and bruises. His 13-year-old brother, Dylan, died of head injuries. Troopers said the younger boy wasn’t wearing a seat belt.
