Hunter, Mcleod Launch Rockets Past Chiefs, 2-0 Rockets 2 Chiefs 0

Kelowna’s J.J. Hunter put his team ahead early with a first-period goal and teammate Gavin McLeod added an insurance score in the third period Tuesday night as the Rockets skated to a 2-0 Western Hockey League win over the Spokane Chiefs at Skyreach Place.

The shutout was the second of the year for Kelowna goaltender Kevin Swanson, who faced only 14 shots.

The Rockets (6-8-1) put only two shots on goal in the opening period of the defensive-minded matchup. Spokane (5-5) mustered just one in the final period.

Hunter scored his third goal of the year on an assist from Quinton Laing. McLeod’s unassisted third-period goal was also his third of the year and came during a 5-minute power play that resulted from a crucial penalty call against Spokane’s Kris Callaway.

The Chiefs, who received 20 saves from goaltender Mike Lencucha, return home to face the Saskatoon Blades tonight at 7:05.
