Mining Pollution Files Available To Public
A final decision on a proposed federal government plan to limit heavy metals in the Coeur d’Alene River basin is still months off.
But public comments on lead, zinc and cadmium limits, known as the total maximum daily load, are now on file at two locations: the North Idaho College Library, 1000 West Garden Ave. in Coeur d’Alene, and the Wallace Public Library, 415 River St.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Idaho Division of Environmental Quality will issue a final plan that reflects the comments, along with ongoing studies about pollution in the basin, the agencies say. The proposal currently hinges on nationwide water quality standards that would force expensive changes for Silver Valley mines and sewer treatment plants from Mullan to Post Falls.
