Shadle Blanks EV In Soccer Playoff
Rachel Jones scored once and set up the other goal Tuesday in Shadle Park’s 2-0 win over East Valley in a Greater Spokane League girls soccer playoff at Mead.
Jones, a sweeper, scored from the right side, 12 yards out.
Shadle (10-7) earned the No. 4 seed to the District 8 4A tournament. EV (10-8) is the No. 5.
The tournament opens today with a pair of loser-out matches at 3 p.m. Shadle plays at No. 3 Central Valley (7-7), and EV meets No. 2 Ferris (9-7).
Shadle is 2-0 vs. CV this season. EV defeated Ferris 1-0 in their lone meeting.
The Great Northern League regular season ended with a match that leads right into the upcoming District 7 2A tournament. Lakeside defeated host Pullman 4-3. Both finished 7-3 in league, but Pullman had an edge in points totals. The teams meet again at noon Saturday at Riverside to open district. Saturday’s other district opener, also a loser-out, is No. 1 Riverside (10-0) vs. No. 4 Medical Lake (4-6) at 2 p.m… . In other GNL final matches, Jen Svennungsen scored twice in Riverside’s 6-0 win at Chewelah (2-8). Chewelah freshman Chelsea Becker hounded Jamie Rizzuto, helping to hold her to one goal on 10 shots… . Medical Lake edged Deer Park 2-1, as Danielle Ristau and Jackie McCall scored during a 2-1 shootout. The Stags finished 0-10.
Volleyball
Kelicia Shorts had 13 kills and four blocks as visiting Riverside (3-8 Great Northern League) defeated Deer Park 3-0 to complete the field for the District 7 2A tournament. The six-team district tournament, Nov. 6 at East Valley, will determine two berths to the state tournament. DP finished 2-10… . Also in the league, Jen Barcus totaled 21 kills, 16 digs and 10 blocks in Lakeside’s 3-0 win over visiting Newport (4-7). Bridget Ryan added 13 digs and nine kills for the Eagles (11-0), who have wrapped up the No. 1 seed to district.
Colville (6-3) tuned up for the District 7 3A tournament by defeating visiting Cheney 15-10, 15-11, 15-12 in the final Border League match for both. Colville trailed the second game 9-4 and the final 11-4. Karlie Pein and Christa Stanford had two kills apiece, and Ellen Shaw two aces to lead the third-game comeback. Katie Fondell led Colville with 11 kills and 20 digs. The Indians host Saturday’s district tournament and are guaranteed a berth in the Region IV 3A tournament. Cheney (3-6) needs to win its opening district match to clinch a regional berth.
St. John-Endicott (10-1) defeated visiting Garfield-Palouse 15-10, 19-17 to clinch at least a tie for the Whitman County League title.
SJE plays Tekoa-Oakesdale (9-2) Thursday to complete the league season. SJE, T-O and Gar-Pal (8-3) are assured spots in the District 9 B tournament.
