Art Submission Deadline Approaching
June 1 is the deadline for artists to submit proposals to the Spokane Arts Commission to be considered for the 2001 season at Chase Gallery in Spokane City Hall.
Artists should send between 10 and 20 slides of recent work, along with a resume, artist statement and self-addressed stamped envelope to: Exhibiting Committee, Spokane Arts Commission, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd., Spokane, WA 99201.

June 1 is also the deadline for submission of artwork to be considered for the regional juried show of Adam East Museum & Art Center in Moses Lake.
Artists from Washington, Idaho and Oregon are encouraged to creatively interpret the theme “Baseball as Art.” The exhibit will run from July 28 to Aug. 26. Entry fee is $5 per entry, with a limit of three.

Smoking Release Associates is urging artists nationwide to enter its “Tobacco Ad Parody Contest,” with a goal of helping people become more aware of the hazards of smoking.
Artists can use drawing or painting to make light of the tobacco industry’s ads and slogans.
Top prize for the adult category is $500. The best youth entry wins a $500 savings bond.

Auditions
The Rogue Players will hold auditions for “The Rat Catcher’s Daughter, or Death Valley Daze” at 7 p.m. May 8-10 at the Yogi Bear Camp-Resort near the Medical Lake exit. (Take exit 272 off I-90 and follow the signs.)
There are roles for five men and eight women who are at least 16 years old. Production dates are June 22-29 in the resort’s outdoor amphitheater.

The Cutter Theatre in Metaline Falls, Wash., will hold auditions for “The Sound of Music” at 7 p.m. May 9 and 11 in the theater’s auditorium, and May 10 by appointment.
Actors must sing and read from the script and dance for several roles. Director Tara Leininger needs to fill parts for seven children, a women’s chorus and many non-singing parts. Solo vocal auditions are required for those auditioning for a lead role.
Rehearsals begin May 22; production dates are July 27-29 and September 1-3.

Classes and workshops
Spokane Civic Theatre continues its new series of Saturday workshops for adults with “Dancing for Dummies” from noon to 2 p.m. May 13, at the Firth J. Chew Studio Theatre, 1020 N. Howard. Cost is $20.
Instructor Michael Muzatko will help students through the basic 10 dance steps, which they will work into a dance combo.

Spokane Art School will offer the following classes:
“Gourd Embellishment Workshop,” 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday, cost: $30 plus $10 lab fee.
“Watercolor for Calligraphy,” 9 a.m.-noon May 13, cost: $20 plus $3 lab fee.
“Still Life Watercolor Master Class,” 9 a.m.-4 p.m. May 13, cost: $70.
“Teacher Planning-Day Art Workshops,” will be 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. May 15. Several classes cost $14 per workshop, or $35 for the whole day.
