FOR THE RECORD: February 2, 2000: Story wrong: A proposed zone change for up to 480 acres of a prospective Genie Industries site will be considered Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. by the Grant County Commission. The governing body was misidentified in Friday’s County Lines.

WASHINGTON

Adams County Othello

Bird lovers will gather for the annual Sandhill Crane Festival March 24-26. Keynote speaker will be Dr. Felipe Chavez-Ramirez, an official with the World Wildlife Fund in Mexico. Scenic wildlife tours will be offered and those attending will hear about crane folklore, attend an art show and view craft exhibits.

Ferry County Republic

Ferry County will soon be marketed to the world as a good site for industrial development. The Washington State Community Trade and Economic Development council announced it will include Ferry County on a web-based program to encourage companies to locate in rural Washington. Grant County Moses Lake

Up to 480 acres of a prospective Genie Industries site may soon revert to agricultural zoning. Owned by Crawford Jones, the land will likely be switched from heavy industrial to ag at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. Although the crane and lift manufacturer from Redmond, Wash., is planning to use some of the site, plan changes for the basin have left the company needing a smaller campus than anticipated.

Lincoln County Odessa

Despite scant membership, the Odessa Economic Development Council has decided to continue its mission. The decade-old group is down to about seven members, but is still dedicated to research, development and advertisement for Odessa. Pend Oreille County Newport Despite a lack of financial support from City Council, the local police department is fund-raising for a K-9 officer. The council gave its approval for a search and rescue/ drug dog program if the department could raise the money. Letters have gone out to citizens asking for donations.

Spokane County Deer Park

The Deer Park Seventh-day Adventist Church will conduct a five-session natural lifestyle cooking class Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. beginning this Tuesday. The class will teach homemade bread making, making breakfast a better meal, planning a balanced menu and healthy desserts. Participants will receive an illustrated cookbook. Stevens County Colville

Local eighth-graders recently reenacted what coming to America was like in the 19th century. Dressed in turn-of-the-century garb, kids went through the immigration process in the school annex.

Whitman County Pullman

In celebration of Black History Month, WSU’s School of Music and Theatre is presenting “for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf.” Performances are today and Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Jones Theatre of Daggy Hall. The award-winning play intermingles music, dance, acting and poetry and is co-directed by Phyllis Gooden-Young and Teresa Wolf-Spencer. Benewah County Tensed

“Meet Your Neighbor Day,” the 4th annual event, will be held 2-5 p.m. Sunday by the Tensed Area Business Association. Residents are invited to meet local officials, firefighters and neighbors at Camp Sanders, about two miles east of U.S. Highway 95 on Sanders Road. Refreshments will be served.

Bonner County Sandpoint

The artwork of the late artist D.R. “Rocky” Rothwell will be displayed 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today and Saturday. Rothwell died in an accident Dec. 24, 1999. A reception and bidding on the final collection of stone and clay sculptures, pottery, watercolor and acrylics is set for 3:30-5:30 p.m. Saturday at Art Works Gallery, 309 N. First St. Proceeds will benefit Rothwell’s estate.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

The Kootenai River Trail project has received a $35,000 grant from the State Parks and Recreation department for its development. The grant will help fund the first five-mile phase located on a historic wagon road in the Katka/Boulder area. Trail uses will include hiking, mountain biking, horse back riding and cross country skiing.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

Leadership Coeur d’Alene, an educational program, will have a graduation ceremony at 9 a.m. Feb. 24 at the Coeur d’Alene Inn and Conference Center. The program is designed to educate current and future leaders about the role they can take in shaping our community. Registration for the ceremony is $10, which includes breakfast and lunch. Latah County Latah

The Palouse Group of the Sierra Club is sponsoring a cross-country, snowshoeing and sledding event today, weather permitting, at the Spring Valley Reservoir, near Moscow. Shoshone County Kellogg

Three volunteer firefighters were honored by the Volunteer Firefighters Association and Shoshone Fire District II. Bobby Montieth and Sarah Leeds each received the “Dedication and Devotion Award.” Montieth has received the award three years in a row. Jeff Frank and Sarah Leeds each received the “Volunteer of the Year” award.
