Public Input Wanted On Couplet Project
Citizens are encouraged to voice their concerns at a public meeting on the Lincoln/Monroe couplet project next week.
The Spokane Regional Transportation Council is asking those in attendance to identify reasonable alternatives to the couplet. The plan previously has been to make Monroe a one-way street with southbound traffic and turn parts of Lincoln, Post and Wall streets into a northbound thoroughfare.
“We will analyze the results and come back to the group with the most likely solution for success in reducing congestion and keeping within the air-quality standards,” said Terry Ziemantz, spokesperson for SRTC.
Ziemantz said he expects about 100 people to attend from the North Hill/Shadle and Emerson/Garfield neighborhoods, as well as representation from city and county government.
The couplet has been a popular topic for residents in the North Hill neighborhood. North Hill is already surrounded by heavy traffic from Division and Maple and Ash. The Lincoln/Monroe couplet would split the middle of North Hill with another channel of busy traffic.
Glenn Miles, SRTC transportation manager, will talk about expected growth and identify the purpose for looking at alternatives.
“The city asked us to take a new look at this to see if there are alternatives to (the couplet),” Ziemantz said. “We’re going to give an overview and ask the public to give input.”
