Back To The Future

Rebecca Nappi For The Editorial

Little Elian Gonzales might have sparked memories in some longtime Spokane residents. They remember other children like him who traveled to Spokane and lived with Catholic families after Castro came to power in the early 1960s. You can read about this little-known piece of Spokane history a week from today in the “Monday Special” feature. For the next three months, readers can peer into the past and find out what ever happened to people and places from long and not so long ago. “Then and Now,” which starts today, is an attempt to update some old stories and also demonstrate how much - or how little - really changes as a community and a nation grows older.

You’ll read about those 1910 fires in Idaho and Western Montana and also what’s changed in television as it celebrates its 50th anniversary this summer.

The newspaper, with its vast story and photo archives, is in a unique position to research history and provide its relevance to the future. So sit back on summer Monday mornings and travel with us to years past.
