Clinic Celebrating 10Th Anniversary

From Staff

A successful experiment in rural health care will be celebrated today when the Benewah Medical Center in Plummer marks its 10th anniversary.

The open house, featuring a catered barbecue, will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at the clinic, 115 B Street. The public is invited.

The idea for the clinic dates to 1987, when the Coeur d’Alene Tribe began looking for ways to improve its small Indian Health Services clinic. After realizing the need for health care services in the rural town was also great for nonIndians, they collaborated with the city of Plummer to establish a new clinic. Together, the tribe and city secured state and federal funding to open Benewah Medical Center on June 4, 1990.

The clinic opened with a staff of 14 and 800 patients. It now employs 100 and has more than 10,000 registered patients. The clinic was nearly tripled in size in 1994 and, in 1997, opened the nearby multi-purpose Wellness Center.
