Vandals Buck Broncos

It was quite a sister act for Idaho on Friday night. Heather Kniss had 24 kills and a game-high 27 digs and Jenny Kniss tallied a game-high 26 kills to go along with 18 digs as the Vandals rolled to a 15-12, 18-16, 11-15, 15-10 win over Boise State in a Big West Conference women’s volleyball match in Moscow.

The Vandals (14-12, 5-10) also got 19 kills and 21 digs from Regan Butler, 15 kills from Anna-Marie Hammond and an 83-assist effort from Jenny Neville en route to the victory.

Tara Brinkerhoff had a team-high 24 kills for the Broncos (7-19, 3-13).

Jennifer Gabel had 12 kills with just one error and finished with a .579 attack percentage to propel Eastern Washington to a 15-10, 17-15, 15-4 semifinal victory over Northern Arizona in the Big Sky Conference tournament in Sacramento, Calif.

Robyn Sonju-Felder and Angie Hall each added 11 kills as EWU (18-9) advanced to the championship game against either Sacramento State or Montana State.

Women’s basketball

Angie Gorton scored 13 points to lead five players in double figures and Colorado State dominated the first half on their way to a 71-60 win over Idaho in a regular-season opener at the Nevado Tournament in Reno.

The Rams, who led 34-22 at the half, controlled the boards by a 41-29 advantage.

Darci Pemberton hit 7 of 19 shots from the floor, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range, and finished with a game-high 18 points for Idaho. She also led all rebounders with 13.

The Vandals will take on either Nevada or Alabama-Birmingham tonight.

Amanda Edlund scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Erin Torpey added 12 points and 10 boards to lead North Idaho to a 68-65 overtime win over Treasure Valley in the first round of the Ricks Invitational in Rexburg, Idaho.

Angie Lewis hit 5 of 17 3-point attempts to finish with a team-high 15 points for NIC in its regular-season opener. Amy Lewis contributed 13 points and five rebounds.

Tara Jones, who missed two free throws with less than a second remaining, hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer ending overtime, giving Indiana a 77-74 victory over Washington at Bloomington, Ind., in Kathi Bennett’s debut as the Hoosiers’ coach.

A 3-point basket by Washington’s Megan Franza with just over a minute left in overtime had put the Huskies up 74-72.
