Bible scholar to speak in CdA
The Rev. Terence Fretheim will be in Coeur d’Alene today as part of the Bible Scholar Series at Trinity Lutheran Church, 812 N. Fifth.
He will be speaking on “The God to Whom You Pray” today from 9 a.m. to noon and from 7 to 8 p.m.
Fretheim is a professor of the Old Testament at Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul, Minn., and is the author of numerous books, including “In God’s Image: A Study of Genesis” and “About the Bible: Short Answers to Big Questions.”
The public is welcome, and there is no charge, though a free-will offering will be collected.
Fretheim will also be speaking during the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services at Trinity on Sunday and during the 9:45 a.m. adult education hour.
Catholics to gather
Catholics are invited to attend the Catholic Conference 2000 scheduled for Oct. 21 at the Ag Trade Center in downtown Spokane. The featured speaker is Kenan Osborne, a professor at the Franciscan School of Theology in Berkeley, Calif.
The conference will run from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. The day will be filled with three sessions, with six workshops offered during each session.
Workshop topics will include youth ministry, spirituality, working with volunteers and the use of popular films in teaching the Sacraments.
Bishop William Skylstad of the Spokane Diocese will lead two workshops. Other presenters include the Rev. Tom McCurdy, pastor of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church; Rev. Randy Quinn, pastor of Fowler United Methodist Church; and the Rev. Ron Green and Sister Cathy Beckley, interim co-directors of the Spokane Council of Ecumenical Ministries,
The cost is $35 per person, which includes lunch. The price rises to $40 after Friday.

Auction to aid retreat center
The Immaculate Heart Retreat Center will host its sixth annual Octoberfeast dinner and auction Sunday at 4 p.m.
The evening will begin with a silent auction. Dinner will be at 5:30 p.m.
Several items, including a 1994 Ford van, will be auctioned off orally during the evening.
The cost is $25 per person, which includes two drink coupons.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the retreat center.

Orchestra’s season begins
The Westminster Chamber Orchestra will perform its first concert of the season Friday at 8 p.m.
The works of Mendelssohn, Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Johan Michael Haydn will be performed. An encore performance is scheduled for 8 p.m. next Saturday.
The orchestra is composed of members of the Spokane Symphony. The group made its debut in January and is sponsored by Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ.
The orchestra will be joined on stage by the Spokane Area Children’s Chorus and harpist Leslie Stratton Norris. Both concerts will be at Westminster Congregational, 411 S. Washington. Tickets are $12, available at the door or in advance through G&B Select-a-Seat locations or by calling 325-SEAT.
Baha’i convention Sunday
Members of the Baha’i Faith in Eastern Washington and North Idaho will gather at West Valley High School Sunday for the annual Baha’i district convention.
The event will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. During the convention, delegates to the national Baha’i convention will be elected.
