Fun aplenty at Hillyard Festival

This year’s Hillyard Festival kicks off Friday at noon in Harmon Park, located on Market Street between Decatur and Bismark.

The festival, with a history of more than 90 years, is the oldest neighborhood event in Spokane.

It is organized by the Hillyard Festival Association and will run Friday through Sunday, with the Hi-Jinks Parade Saturday morning.

The park will be the center of three days of fun with entertainment, games, crafts, vendors, food, soft drinks, cotton candy and more. Events Friday will be from noon to 10 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On Saturday the Hillyard Festival Association and the Lilac City Young Marines will serve a pancake breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. at the Market Street Market, 5906 N. Market St. Parade lineup will begin at 9 a.m. The 45-minute parade will start at 10 a.m. and passes through Hillyard’s historic business district and north to Harmon Park. “To Market, To Market,” is the theme of this year’s parade. Cash awards are given to the best costumes and float.

Hillyard’s history and railroad memorabilia will be on display at the Hillyard Heritage Museum, open from 10 a.m. to noon.
