McNett captures 2 gold medals in England match

The Spokane Junior Rifle team returned last week, medals in hand, after competing in the Great Briton Juniors International Match held in Bisley, England from Aug. 10-13.

The team from Spokane, who earned the international bid after placing first in Washington and second at the National Meet in Arkansas, joined a team from Pennsylvania to represent the United States. Teams from England, Germany, South Africa, Ireland, Denmark and Malta were also present at the international match.

Six Spokane Juniors competed: Eric McNett, Keith McBeth, Elisha Lafond, Jettie Runkel, Lauren Furrer and Amana Furrer.

McNett, 17, captured two gold medals in the men’s 50 meter three position events, shooting 1204 in the individual competition and earning his second gold in the team competition. He was also awarded a bronze medal in the men’s 10 meter Air Rifle and was on the USA men’s 10 meter Air Rifle team that captured the silver medal. McBeth placed in the top 15 of both individual events.

Lafond earned two bronze medals in the women’s 10 meter Air Rifle, her first in the individual event and her other in the team competition.

Lauren Furrer and Runkel won the gold medal in the women’s 50 meter three position team events while Amanda Furrer and Lafond won the bronze.

Soccer

U-13 Spokane Shadow player, James Matern, recently returned to Spokane after being selected as one of the 100 boys from around the country to participate in the inaugural id2 National Training Camp held in Raleigh, N.C.

Matern, who earned a spot in each nightly all-star game, received positive reviews from staff members and scouts, who highlighted his strong defensive abilities.

•The U-13 Navy Spokane Shadow girl’s team won last weekend’s Rimland Pacific Cup tournament in Bellingham, Wash. The Shadow, coached by Katie Carpenter, defeated the FC Royals from Tacoma, Wash., 2-1 in the semifinal before beating Eastside FC from Seattle 1-0 in the Championship. The team’s roster: Hilary Ambriz, Tanya Baker, Alexa Banaugh, Chelsie Breen, Holleigh Bergstrom, Ashley Berto, Karina Carpenter, Nicole Fox, Lexi Greenwood, Rachael Head, Vanity Horton, Ellie LaRocca, Molly O’Brien, Kassie Panther, McKenzie Schnell and Kellie Zakrzewski.

Softball

Melissa Rice and Jennie Smith, who both play for schools in the 2A Great Northern League, represented Eastern Washington in last week’s ASA Gold Fastpitch National Championships in Atlanta, Ga. Rice, who plays school-ball for Colville High, pitched for the Washington Ladyhawks. Smith, a Riverside High fastpitch player, played outfield for the Washington Spirit. The two teams from Washington tied for 33rd place out of 65 teams that qualified.
