State ferry goes aground in San Juans

Associated Press

SEATTLE — A Washington state ferry sailing from Friday Harbor to Anacortes went aground Friday evening on Reid Rock, about 15 minutes out of Friday Harbor.

No injuries were reported.

The ferry Sealth returned to Friday Harbor and was tied up after the incident at 8:15 p.m., said Susan Harris, a spokeswoman for Washington State Ferries.

Harris said it didn’t immediately appear that damage was extensive, but divers would inspect the boat today. The Coast Guard and ferry system both will investigate the incident.

It was not immediately known how many people were on board at the time of the grounding.

Ferries officials planned to cancel today’s international sailing from Anacortes to Vancouver Island so the ferry on that route, the Elwha, can be used in place of the Sealth.

Today was scheduled to be the last day for the international run before its normal shutdown during the winter.
