Chiefs add a player on eve of busy week

The Spokesman-Review

With four games this week and two players missing, the Spokane Chiefs on Monday added a player.

Drayson Bowman, a 15-year-old left winger who is playing for the Kimberley Dynamiters of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, will join the Chiefs when they visit Everett tonight.

Bowman, originally from Littleton, Colo., and the Chiefs’ first-round draft selection in 2004, will take up some of the slack for J.P. Szaszkiewicz and Mike Reich, who are gone for the Under-17 World Hockey Challenge. Bowman has 19 goals and 37 points in 33 games.

Spokane, coming off a 10-day break, will be home Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Kelowna, then visit Tri-City and Vancouver this weekend.

College basketball

Idaho has its first Big West Conference men’s basketball player of the week for 2004-05.

Senior swingman Dandrick Jones, who had a game-high 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals in the Vandals’ 69-62 upset of Utah State on Thursday, was honored by the conference Monday.

High school basketball

Carlos Durazo hit 14 of 15 free throws in a 36-point game for St. Michael’s, which made 12 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter to pull out a 58-50 win over Mansfield in the first round of the boys division of the Moses Lake Christian Tournament. John Lee had 11 rebounds in his first varsity action for St. Michael’s.

Boys: Tumwater 58, Riverside 55 (OT): Buddy Wood scored 16 points and Adam Anderson had 11 rebounds for the Rams, who lost the first-round game in the Another Level Christmas Classic in Seattle.

Girls: Riverside 68, Darrington 35: Kayla Newberg (12) and Dani Schneider (10) led a balanced attack that saw 10 Rams score in the victory in the first round of the Another Level Christmas Classic in Seattle.
