Don’t let Theron’s looks fool you

It’s funny how we typecast actors. Or how Hollywood does. No one over the past few years has worked harder than South African actress Charlize Theron . And pretty much every one of the two dozen or so movies that she’s appeared in since 1995 has taken as much advantage as possible of her leggy blondness.

Patty Jenkins wasn’t fooled. In “Monster,” Jenkins’ look at noted serial killer Aileen Wuornos, she directs Theron to a performance that is truly magnificent. If you want to read more, just go to my full review of the film. It opens in Spokane on Friday at the River Park Square Cinemas. Fans of acting, particularly those who like to ignore stereotypes, are in for a treat.

Just prepare yourself: “Monster” is a harsh look at a life ruled by desperation. Just as in real life, the movie doesn’t give us a happy ending. Far from it, in fact.
