RiverHawks falter in ninth, fall to Kings
It was not a good day for Brett Sommer.
The Spokane RiverHawks pitcher came into the ninth with a runner on third, nobody out and a 3-0 lead. He then gave up a walk and five hits as the Portland Kings scored four in the top of the ninth to knock off the RiverHawks 4-3 Wednesday at Spokane Falls Community College.
The RiverHawks (3-17) scored in each of the first two innings and added another in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead.
Ryan Stevenson knocked in the first run as Brad Wark and Matt Robinson reached base off the help of two Portland (7-13) errors.
Derek Dupree had an RBI groundout in the second after James Ortega and Troy Hanzawa each singled and advanced on a passed ball.
In the fifth, Robinson and Stevenson singled with Robinson advancing to third on a Nolan Massie strikeout. B.J. DuBarry then hit into a fielder’s choice to score Robinson.
Brian Fadling got the win for Portland, throwing four innings of three-hit relief.
