Calling all Trekkies, ‘Voyager’ now available

Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart star in

“Star Trek Voyager” (Complete first three seasons)

•••1/2

Each of the “Star Trek” franchises has its own special attraction, especially among the recurring characters. The original introduced the great and powerful Spock (Leonard Nimoy). “The Next Generation” added a level of class with its elegant captain, Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). “Deep Space Nine” gave us the strange Changeling security chief named Odo (Rene Auberjonois). As for “Star Trek: Enterprise,” well, it stars Scott Bakula, so enough said there. If for no other reason than it has the best theme song, “Star Trek Voyager,” at its best, ranks with any of the individual series. Besides, you can’t ignore the fact that Kate Mulgrew’s Capt. Elizabeth Janeway is as tough as any of her male counterparts, and that Robert Beltran’s face tattoos are cool. Whatever, the first three seasons of the series are out in a special collected edition that features all 67 episodes. It’s perfect for the true fan – or at least those who can afford the $272 price tag. (DVD only; 19 discs; not rated).

“The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie”

•••1/2

A charismatic teacher at a Scottish girls boarding school, Jean Brodie (Maggie Smith) confuses her needs with world politics, ends up preaching about the glory of Mussolini and, in doing so, loses the support of the school administration and “her girls.” Smith won a Best Actress Oscar in this Ronald Neame adaptation of the Muriel Spark novel, available for the first time on DVD. (DVD; 1:56; rated PG).

“The Butterfly Effect”

••

In this chilling tale of how one man affects everything around him merely by the power of his mind, Ashton Kutcher plays a hotshot college student named Evan who discovers he has the power to change the past. But changes have consequences, and Evan’s attempts to “makes things perfect” affect not only him, but also his family and friends, especially the girl he loves, Kayleigh (Irene Gorovaia/Amy Smart). As in a creepy variation on “Groundhog Day,” Evan has to go through his life again and again, despite the damage that he is doing to his brain. But will he ever get things right? More to the point, will Kutcher ever learn to act? This guy needs to get “Punked.” (DVD, VHS; 2:00; rated R for violence, sexual content, language, brief drug use).
