Barbecue, ride for bikers, planned for next Saturday
The Spokane Valley Church of the Nazarene is hosting a unique outreach event next Saturday.
The church has its own biker ministry called Faith Riders. That group is sponsoring a barbecue lunch and ride for motorcyclists. Registration for the event begins at 10 a.m., followed by a short service at 11 a.m. The service will be led by Steve Wilson, the church’s executive pastor, who also works as an NFL umpire.
The barbecue will be at noon, with a 50-mile ride to follow. Event organizer Doug Rudolph said he isn’t sure yet what the exact route will be. “We’re going to head south on Highway 27,” he said.
This is the first such event at Valley Nazarene, at 15515 E. 20th Ave. Rudolph said he got the idea from a Nazarene church in Ohio that has held a similar event six times. The first year 66 bikers attended. Last year’s event attracted more than 9,000.
“This is an adventure for us,” he said. “We don’t know how many we’re going to have.”
Rudolph is a biker himself, frequently taking trips on his Honda GL1800 Goldwing. “We that own them call them road sofas,” he said. “They’re so comfortable.”

The session is open to all children in grades K-6. There will be music, puppet performances and stories.

The church would like to invite anyone in the community to help. Be sure to wear protective clothing such as long pants, leather gloves, sturdy shoes and hats and bring a water bottle.
