County OKs bond sale for new Moran library
Moran Prairie residents are one step closer to having a new library.
On May 18, Spokane County commissioners approved the sale of the $2.35 million Moran Prairie Library Capital Facility Area bonds to underwriter Piper Jaffray.
Moody’s Investors Service assigned a positive A3 rating to the bonds, citing the tax area’s small but growing tax base and the Spokane County Library District’s stable financial operations and healthy reserves.
Voters in the Moran and Glenrose Prairie communities approved two proposals last November.
One formed the Moran Prairie Library capital facility area and another approved the sale of up to $2.35 million of general obligation bonds for construction.
The 8,000-square-foot building will be in the 6000 block of South Regal Street and will more than triple both available materials and library seating and provide additional computer work stations, small study rooms and a 100-seat meeting room for community use and library programs. The community currently uses a 2,800-square-foot storefront branch in the Cedar Canyon Village shopping center.
Spokane County Library District and ALSC Architects will be hosting a series of open houses, the first from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Moran Prairie Grange. The community is being asked to comment on the schematic design (a generalized site plan and library layout) that’s being developed by ALSC in conjunction with the district’s design committee.
All remarks will be considered by the design committee in developing the schematic design package for the June 15 approval by the district’s board of trustees.
Representatives from both the Spokane County Library District and ALSC will be on hand Tuesday to answer any questions.
Two other upcoming community open houses are scheduled for Aug. 31 and Nov. 9.

Summer youth picnic
Spokane City/County Youth Department and the Hillyard Baptist Church are celebrating the start of summer by hosting a free community picnic, “Summer Salsa.”
Learn a few new salsa dance moves and enjoy music and a barbecue. Festivities are from 4 to 7 p.m. June 10 at Sharpley-Harmon Park.
Booth space will be available for groups to publicize their summer events.
Heather Adams from the Spokane City/County Youth Department and the Rev. John Dotson of Hillyard Baptist Church hope this celebration is the beginning of a new tradition in Hillyard.
“There are a lot of activities available in the summer time that the community may not be aware of, and we hope this event is the first of many more to promote such activities. We’re really excited that we can provide something like this,” said Adams.
Health care, summer camps, recreational activities and family services are among the resources expected to be showcased at Summer Salsa.
