Vladimir Guerrero had a club-record nine runs batted in, homering twice and getting four hits to lead the Anaheim Angels over the Boston Red Sox 10-7 Wednesday night in Anaheim, Calif.

Guerrero’s RBIs were the most in the major leagues since Boston’s Bill Mueller had nine at Texas last July 29.

Anaheim’s David Eckstein went 5 for 5, scored four runs and drove in another.

Guerrero’s second homer was a three-run shot in the sixth off Mike Timlin, who had just replaced Pedro Martinez, and brought the Angels back from a 7-5 deficit.

Guerrero hit a two-run homer off Martinez in the first inning, doubled home two more runs in the third, then hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth. He drove in his ninth run of the night with a single against Keith Foulke in seventh.

The Angels’ previous record of eight RBIs was shared by four players.

Chavez out at least six weeks

Gold Glove third baseman Eric Chavez will be sidelined for at least six weeks with a broken bone in his hand.

Chavez was hurt in the 11th inning of Oakland’s 6-4, 12-inning win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday after getting hit by a pitch from Damaso Marte.

Infielder Esteban German was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to take Chavez’s roster spot.

“I don’t know if I felt worse for myself or the team,” said Chavez, who hopes to have the splint removed from his hand June 21. “In this case, time’s all you’ve got. … I don’t even want to guess. Hopefully, it heals quick and I’ll be ready to go.”

Ordonez headed for DL

White Sox right fielder Magglio Ordonez missed his seventh consecutive game with a strained left calf and probably will go on the disabled list later this week.

Ordonez left during Chicago’s 3-2, 10-inning loss to the Oakland Athletics to fly to Los Angeles, where he will be examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum. He was to return to Chicago later Wednesday for more tests.

An MRI exam taken last Friday showed no structural damage. Still, Ordonez might need surgery, which would sideline him for four to seven weeks.

Prior ready for debut

Mark Prior threw 32 pitches off the mound at Wrigley Field and said he’s ready for his season debut Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

On the disabled list all season with a sore Achilles’ tendon and tender elbow, Prior will be on a pitch limit Friday, one the Cubs aren’t revealing.

Prior, 18-6 last season, said he’s done all the work necessary to return – including three rehab starts – since the injuries started bothering him this spring.

“I’m not here to do anything special. I’m here to do what I have to do. And that’s pitch innings and pitch ball games,” he said, “not try to project five starts down the line or six starts down the line. Just worry about what’s going on in front of me.”
