Six teachers, volunteers cited

Junior Achievement of the Inland Northwest has recognized three educators and three classroom volunteers for exceptional service to the organization. Junior Achievement educates students in kindergarten through 12th grade about business, economics and the free enterprise system.

The individuals were recognized May 18 at a Volunteer Teacher Recognition event held at Spokane Falls Community College. The event was sponsored by Costco.

The individuals recognized are:

Jill Ferguson, Regal Elementary School, elementary school teacher of the year; Alicia Thompson, Bank of America Bankcard Center, elementary volunteer of the year; Ellen Gillespie, Garry Middle School, Middle School Teacher of the Year; Margaret Jones, Johnson Rountree, Middle School Volunteer of the Year; Dannette Driscoll, North Central High School, High School Teacher of the Year; and Chuck Lund, All-State Insurance, High School Volunteer of the Year.

North Wall School carnival

North Wall School’s Parent Teacher Organization is holding its annual carnival with a Hawaiian theme from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday. The event will begin with a Hawaiian Luau. There will be pony rides, a jumping castle, fishing pond, cake walk and more.

North Wall Schools offers both an early childhood program and an elementary school.

Deer Park Elementary recognized for reading program

Deer Park Elementary School has earned the 2004 Exemplary Reading Program Award for Washington state, according to the International Reading Association and the Washington Organization for Reading Development. The school was recognized May 2 at IRA’s 49th annual convention in Reno, Nev.

Deer Park Elementary is one of 27 schools in the United States and Canada to be recognized for its outstanding reading program.
