The University of Washington golf team finished sixth at the NCAA men’s golf championship in Hot Springs, Va., on Friday, 18 strokes behind the winner, California, which rallied to over take UCLA in the final round at The Homestead Resort.

The Huskies entered the final round tied for fourth. It was the fifth top-10 finish in UW’s 17 NCAA appearances.

California rallied from an eight-shot deficit to overtake UCLA and win the tournament at 14-over 1134. The Golden Bears shot 1-under 279 during the final round. They were the only team to post a score below par in difficult, rainy conditions and, along with Texas, was one of just two teams to shoot below 10-over par for the day. UCLA was second at 20-over 1140 followed by Arizona (1148), Texas (1149), Georgia Tech (1151) and then Washington and Florida (1152).

UNLV junior Ryan Moore, a Puyallup, Wash., native, ran away with the individual title. He shot 4-under 66 for a 72-hole total of 13-under 267. Wake Forest’s Bill Haas and Arizona’s Chris Nallen tied for second at 7-under 273.

Washington senior Brock Mackenzie was the Huskies’ top finisher. He shot a 2-over 72 Friday to place 15th at 3-over 283. At the conclusion of the tournament, Mackenzie was named a first-team All-American for the second year in a row by the Golf Coaches Association.

Husky freshmen Alex Prugh (Ferris HS) and Erik Olson both shot 75 during the final round. Prugh finished 28th overall at 8-over 288. Olson was 33rd at 290. Prugh’s finish was the ninth-best by a Washington golfer at the NCAAs. Prugh’s showing tied Mackenzie for the best performance by a UW freshman at the NCAAs.

Senior Dan Potter (Gonzaga Prep) of Coeur d’Alene shot 4-over 74 to finish 44th place at 294. Classmate Corey Prugh (Ferris) shot 77 and placed 65th at 300. Both players recorded their best finishes at the NCAAs.

Baseball

Tulane lefty Brian Bogusevic outdueled Husky ace Tim Lincecum as the Green Wave defeated Washington 3-2 loss in the opening game of the NCAA Oxford (Miss.) Regional at Swayze Field.

The second-seeded Huskies (37-19-1) must now win four straight games to win the regional.

Rowing

Gonzaga University men’s varsity four crew dropped into today’s petite final at the IRA National Championships in Camden, N.J. after the Bulldogs finished sixth during Friday semifinal racing at the 2,000-meter Cooper River course. The Bulldogs had won their opening heat on Thursday to advance to Friday’s semifinals but could not overcome a slow start during the race.

In the men’s freshman four second level semifinals, Gonzaga finished second in its heat race and will compete in today’s “third final.”

The varsity four pulled a time of 6:54.64 but could not catch a fast Michigan boat that won the race in 6:42.7.

Washington’s trio of varsity boats advanced successfully into the grand finals, including the undefeated junior varsity crew that dealt Harvard its first defeat of the season. Washington’s varsity four seeks to defend its national title while the varsity eight and junior varsity eight crews seek their first IRA championships since 1997.
