N.C.’s Uhlenkott shines at Brooks Meet of Champions

Starting today, we begin a weekly youth sports notebook that we hope will help give the youth sports community a focal point in the newspaper.

Because of the incredible number of summer sports leagues and events, we can't possibly report on everything. The aim of this notebook is to report on the highlights of the week for high school-age sports. This would include American Legion baseball and select softball.

It is also our intention to give highlights of state or national events involving all youth sports. Qualifying for a state or national event would also fit the criteria for this notebook. In years past, we compiled many of these tournaments in our Sunday Locally column. Look for it now in the Tuesday notebook.

North Central graduate Mike Uhlenkott won the boy’s pole vault, tying his personal best at 15 feet, 3 inches, in Saturday’s Brooks Meet of Champions at Lewis & Clark College in Portland.

The meet is a championship between Washington and Oregon all-star track and field athletes.

After posting 15-3, Uhlenkott made three unsuccessful attempts at 16 feet.

Uhlenkott has already met qualifying marks that earned an invitation to the National Scholastic Championship on June 18-19 in Raleigh, N.C.

Junior Legion Baseball

Central Valley (3-1) has allowed one hit in each of its last three Junior Legion baseball games.

On the mound, three different pitchers have accomplished the feat of 21 consecutive scoreless innings.

Against Ferris Jake Swanko struck out 9. Teammate Scott Froehlich pitched his one-hitter against East Valley.

Central Valley split games with Walla Walla last weekend. Dane Knudson tossed his one-hitter in the second game.

Youth track and field

The summer youth track program for all ages held its first meet of the season Saturday at Whitworth.

The Inland Northwest Track and Field Championships will be held at Washington State University on June 12 and the Inland Northwest Junior Olympics Track and Field Championships for athletes 18 and younger will be held at Eastern Washington University on June 19.

The top eight finishers receive medals and qualify for the Region XIII Junior Olympics Championships in West Seattle on July 10-11.

Youth basketball

The Spokane Nimrods sixth-grade boys AAU basketball team has qualified two times to compete in the National AAU Tournament next month in Virginia.

The team won the AAU Inland Empire Division 1 Championship in Spokane in April. In May, they finished second in the Best in the West tournament in Yakima.

The team roster includes: David Nelson, Jack Wilson, Clint Girkins, Tyrell Seay, Nick Lenoue, Conner Halliday, J.D. Lucas, Charlie Griffin, Jordan Tonani, Riley Stockton, and Ryan Nicholas.

The team is coached by Phil Lenoue and Jim Wilson.

•The Washington All-State girls basketball games are slated for June 19, at Mead High School.

All-day admission for adults is $5 and for children (12 and under) and senior citizens it’s $3.

There will be four games: B West vs. B East at 1:30 p.m.; 1A East vs. 1A West at 3:15; 2A East vs. 2A West at 5:00; and3A-4A East vs. 3A-4A West at 6:45.

Football

This summer, the Seattle Seahawks will host the Seahawks-Gatorade Junior Training Camps throughout the Northwest.

The camps will be held in Seattle, Portland and eastern Washington beginning June 22 through August 7.

The camp is free to children aged eight to 15.

A total of 14 camp dates have been set aside for boys and girls to develop their skills and learn the fundamentals of the game. North Central High School will host a camp on July 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Volleyball

The 19th annual East vs. West All-State Volleyball series will be July 7-8 at Fife High School in Fife, Wash., July 9 at Davis High School in Yakima and July 10 at Lewis and Clark High School.

To be eligible for selection, athletes must be senior all-league selections and return the applications they receive in January. Six teams are then selected by a group of coaches from all divisions.
