Jack and Dan’s expanding site and offerings
A popular North Spokane tavern will double in size and add a restaurant and cocktail lounge by September.
Jack and Dan’s, at 1226 N. Hamilton, will grow to about 4,500 square feet by the time the expansion is complete, said tavern co-owner Jack Stockton, father of basketball great John Stockton. Jack Stockton’s partner is Jeff Condill.
Stockton said when University United Drug, next door at 1230 N. Hamilton, closed in November, Jack and Dan’s had the opportunity to expand. The drug store was owned by Stu Zimmerman, who closed it and opened Rapid Refill Ink, a printer cartridge company, in downtown Spokane.
Jack and Dan’s plans to hire a chef and add a full menu of “general restaurant fare,” Stockton said, including entrees such as roast beef and ham and possibly some Italian dishes. The tavern’s menu now is limited to soup and sandwiches.
“We’re just offering one more service than we always have,” Stockton said.
The city of Spokane’s building permit list shows the remodeling project is valued at $125,000.
Jack and Dan’s has been a tavern since the 1930s, when it was started by Louis Tonani, said Stockton, who bought the bar with former partner Dan Crowley in 1960. Crowley retired 14 years ago, and Condill, a former Gonzaga University teammate of John Stockton’s, became the new partner.
The bar on the southeast corner of Hamilton and Sharp has long been a favorite place for basketball fans to watch John Stockton’s former teams, the Utah Jazz and Gonzaga Bulldogs. John Stockton retired last year after 19 years in the NBA.
