•On June 26, 1541, Francisco Pizarro, the governor of Peru and conqueror of the Inca civilization, is assassinated in Lima during dinner by Spanish rivals.
•On June 22, 1937, Joe Louis wins the world heavyweight boxing title with an eighth-round knockout of American Jim Braddock in Chicago’s Comiskey Park. Louis would successfully defend his title 25 times, scoring 21 knockouts, the longest reign in the history of the heavyweight division.
•On June 25, 1950, armed forces from communist North Korea smash into South Korea, surprising the South Korean army (and the small U.S. force stationed in the country) and setting off the Korean War.
