Is it the end of the festival to end all festivals?

Lollapalooza WHATceled?

Music lovers across America are donning black arm bands and bowing their heads in silence.

After being hailed by many as the potential “festival to end all festivals,” Lollapalooza 2004 was canceled Tuesday afternoon because of “weak ticket sales.”

That’s right. The national festival – boasting a lineup featuring Morrissey, the Pixies, the Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, Modest Mouse and more – couldn’t … sell … tickets. Fans who already have purchased tickets will be issued refunds.

“I’m surprised that given the great bands and the reduced ticket prices that we didn’t have enough sales to sustain the tour,” tour co-founder Marc Geiger stated in a press release Tuesday.

Surprised? So are we, Marc. And a little bit sick.

Curiosa Tour at the Gorge

In a bit of better news, the Cure is bringing its summer festival to the Gorge Amphitheatre on Aug. 21.

Interpol, Rapture and Mogwai will open for Robert Smith and company on the main stage, while Cursive, the Cooper Temple Clause, Head Automatica and others will rock the second stage.

Tickets go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. via Ticketmaster ( www.ticketmaster.com or 509-735-0500).

Changes, announcements

Anyone who’s loved them long time will want to catch 2 Live Crew at the Big Easy Concert House on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, which are $10, went on sale Wednesday through TicketsWest (ticketswest.com or 325-SEAT).

For the laid-back crowd, Blues Traveler will be at the Big Easy for a special show on Thursday at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 and went on sale last Thursday at 10 a.m. Tickets are available through TicketsWest.

Thus, the Ottmar Liebert show with Luna Negra on Thursday has been moved from the Big Easy to next door’s Met Theater. All previously purchased tickets will be honored and have the appropriate reserved seat at the Met. Tickets are through TicketsWest.

Also, ex-Talking Heads frontman, Luaka Bop label founder and solo artist extraordinaire David Byrne is bringing his lushly arranged world rock to the Big Easy on Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. Tickets go on sale today at 10 a.m. through TicketsWest.
