NIC splits pair of games

Lindsie Nielsen and Sheri Shrock combined on a four-hitter Thursday as Salt Lake Community College defeated North Idaho College 6-1 in the second round of the Scenic West Athletic Conference softball tournament at St. George, Utah.

NIC (28-29) dropped into the consolation bracket and will meet CC Southern Nevada (16-31) this morning in an attempt to avoid elimination. SLCC (42-13) moved into today’s semifinal against host Dixie State (48-4-2).

NIC, the No. 3 seed, opened the day with a 1-0 win over sixth-seeded Colorado Northwestern CC (5-52). Nina Doane allowed three singles, struck out eight and walked none.

The Cardinals’ Erica Demers went 0 for 3 but drove in Lindsay Riley with one out in the seventh.

In the second game, SLCC’s Angela Garrard went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Jill Oglesbee scored NIC’s run in the fourth, knocked in by Shaena Pelan.

Women’s golf

Washington State junior Kim Welch fired a 1-under-par 71 at the Stanford (Calif.) Golf Course and is tied for fourth place after the first of three rounds of the NCAA West Regional.

Men’s basketball

Guard Josh Akognon of Casa Grande High in Petaluma, Calif., has signed a national letter of intent to play at Washington State, Cougars coach Dick Bennett announced.

Akognon averaged 30 points per game during his senior season.
