Southern California captures women’s water polo title

STANFORD, Calif. – Freshman Brittany Hayes scored three goals to lead Southern California to an NCAA women’s water polo title with a 10-8 victory over Loyola Marymount on Sunday.

USC (29-0) also got goals from seven other players to complete their first undefeated season and win their first national title since 1999.

Cara Colton scored four goals and Stacia Peterson had three for the Lions (25-6), who reached the championship match for the first time.

Stanford defeated Hartwick College of Oneonta, N.Y., 10-8, in the third-place game.
