Post Falls boys golf team earns its first trip to state

The Spokesman-Review

The Post Falls boys golf team is finally going to get to do something the girls golf teams at the school have been doing consistently. Go to state.

While the boys team earned its first trip to state Monday, the school’s girls team earned its third Region I 4A championship in four years to again qualify for state.

Both of the state tournaments will be at Stoneridge next Monday and Tuesday.

The Trojans boys qualified by shooting a state-qualifying score of 303 while finishing second – by a stroke – to Moscow in the 4A Regional Tournament at Hidden Lakes Country Club in Post Falls. Sandpoint, which finished third in the three-school regional, will also advance to state because it is the host school.

David Nuhn of Moscow claimed medalist honors with a par 70. Nick Cuchessi of Post Falls defeated Nick Martonick of Moscow for second on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff after both shot 71s.

Post Falls won a one-hole playoff against Moscow for the girls regional title after both schools shot 405s. The score is a state-qualifying score, so Moscow will also advance. Sandpoint, which had only three girls in the event, will also play at state as the host school.

Kelli Tathan of Moscow was medlist with an 88. Katie Christian of Moscow beat Ashleigh Mire of Sandpoint for second in a one-hole playoff after both shot 90s.

• In the 3A regional at Stoneridge, the Lakeland boys and Kellogg girls captured titles.

The top two schools and top five boys and girls qualified for state next Monday and Tuesday at Stoneridge.

The Kellogg boys and Bonners Ferry girls were the other team qualifiers.

Leading the individuals were medalists Casey Murphy of Lakeland, who shot a 3-under-par 68 for the boys, and Kayla Reid of St. Maries, who bested teammate Dana Arrhenius 90-93. Rhys Sandaker of Bonners Ferry was second among the boys with a 69.

Boys who qualified from non-qualifying schools besides Sandaker were Joe Lowther of Bonners Ferry and Daniel Warren of Priest River.
