Heary, Urguhart power WV-Yakima past Eagles

Sean Heary homered twice and Billy Urguhart added a three-run blast as West Valley-Yakima qualified for state with an 11-10 win at West Valley-Spokane in Tuesday’s 3A baseball regional semifinal.

Heary’s three-run shot in the fifth gave the Rams an 11-8 lead. The Eagles (10-12) scored twice in the seventh and had the tying run at third base when the final batter struck out.

Tyler Hauschild and Kyle Arnold of the Eagles hit back-to-back homers in the third. Michael Hauschild’s two-run double sparked the Eagles’ six-run fourth.

The Eagles will play Sunnyside at 11 a.m. Saturday in Hanford in a winner-to-state, loser-out game. WV-Yakima and Wapato will follow in the title game, for state seeding.

A.J. Proszek (7-3) pitched a four-hitter, striking out five and allowing no earned runs, and fifth-seeded Chewelah (12-10) topped No. 4 Newport 6-2 at Newport in a loser-out opener of the District 7 2A tournament. Chewelah’s Russ Chartrey had two RBIs with sacrifice flies. Myles Melendez of the Grizzlies (11-10) went 2 for 4 with two stolen bases. Chewelah will travel to Nine Mile Falls today to play top-seeded Lakeside (15-6) at 4… . The other district opener, No. 6 Medical Lake at No. 3 Pullman, was suspended in the eighth, tied at 7. The game will resume at 3 today in Colville. The winner will play No. 2 Colville (15-6) at 4.

Casey Jones (4-6) struck out five and allowed no earned runs as Liberty (4-16) defeated Northwest Christian 2-1 for the fifth and sixth seeds to the District 7 1A tournament. NWC (2-16) allowed both runs on throwing errors. District begins Friday with Liberty playing No. 4 Freeman (11-8) at 1 p.m. at Colfax for the right to meet the host and top-seeded Bulldogs (13-3-1) at 4. At Ritzville, NWC will meet No. 3 Kettle Falls (11-6) at 1, with the winner taking on No. 2 Lind-Ritzville (14-4) at 4.

Tim Burgess pitched a three-hitter and struck out seven as Liberty Christian (14-6) posted a 2-0 win over Tekoa-Oakesdale/Rosalia (16-4) in a loser-out opener of the District 9 B tournament at Shadle Park’s Jackson Field. Travis Widman of the Nighthawks struck out eight and pitched a one-hitter, allowing Craig Lukins’ third-inning double. The Patriots will play DeSales (14-3) Saturday in Pasco for a state berth… . In another district opener, Landon Alexenco’s three-run homer highlighted a six-run fifth as host Touchet (14-6) knocked off LaCrosse-Washtucna 7-1. L-W finished 14-7. Touchet will play Asotin (16-3) for a state berth, also Saturday in Pasco.

Softball

Kassy Schernitzski (13-1) pitched a three-hitter and Mandy Edwards had a two-run double during a four-run first as Kettle Falls (18-2) earned the No. 1 seed to the District 7 1A tournament with a 5-2 win over Freeman at Deer Park. The Scotties (16-3) are the second seed to district, Saturday at Medical Lake… . Rain postponed a district opener at Colfax featuring No. 6 Lind-Ritzville and the host Bulldogs, the third seed. No makeup date was announced… . Fifth-seeded Northwest Christian’s opener at No. 4 Liberty wasn’t reported.

Destiny Christensen (9-2) pitched a five-inning no-hitter while leading host Inchelium (17-3) to a 14-0 win over St. Michael’s (8-14) during the Panorama League tournament. Whitney Flett went 3 for 3 and Steff Signor had four RBIs for the Hornets. Inchelium will play second-seeded Selkirk (19-1) when the tourney resumes Saturday at Kettle Falls… . Elsewhere in the tournament, Danae Ervin and Angela Gimeno were a combined 9 for 10 with 12 runs as St. George’s (7-14) recorded a 32-27 win over Springdale (10-9) in a loser-out game at Republic… . . Republic’s game with St. George’s was suspended in the second inning and will be resumed Thursday… . St. Michael’s opened the day at Inchelium by eliminating Wellpinit (11-8). No details were reported.

Boys golf

Clarkston’s Joel Dahmen shot a 1-under-par 71 at Indian Canyon Golf Course to lead all competitors after the opening round of the District 8 tournament. Dahmen and other Class 3A players move on to Monday’s regional tournament at Sunnyside High. Class 4A golfers will complete district play on Thursday at The Creek at Qualchan. Ferris’ Craig Leslie (72) had the top score among 4A players, one shot better than Central Valley’s Nick Grigsby, University’s Wes Millard, and Gonzaga Prep’s Eric Milhem and Brad Blakley. Ferris, G-Prep and Shadle Park advanced five golfers apiece to the final round, while U-Hi, Mead and North Central sent three apiece.

Tennis

West Valley’s Melody Dossey defeated Clarkston’s Christine Schmidt 6-1, 6-0 in the girls singles championship match of the District 8 3A tournament at West Valley. Both qualified for the May 21-22 regional tournament at Sunnyside.
