The Spokesman-Review

Grant Richardson singled in two runs in the top of the 10th inning and Collin Henderson followed with an RBI double as the Washington State Cougars edged the UCLA Bruins 10-9 in 10 innings in Pac-10 baseball Friday at Los Angeles.

After taking a 10-7 lead in the top of the 10th, WSU had to survive a two-rally by the Bruins in the bottom of the inning. But reliever Wayne Damon held on, getting the win with 2 2/3 innings of work.

The victory in the first game of the three-game series gave WSU a 6-10 record in the Pac-10, 26-20 overall. UCLA fell to 27-24, 8-8.

Richardson finished with three RBIs. Third baseman Zach McAngus led the Cougars at the plate with three hits in five at-bats.

• Gonzaga took an early four-run lead then held on to edge Saint Mary’s 8-7 in a West Coast Conference game at Avista Stadium.

Bobby Carlson hit a grand slam to give the Bulldogs (22-26, 14-11) a 5-1 lead in the third inning. Saint Mary’s (7-18, 14-36) closed to 6-5 with a four-run seventh inning, with the big blow being Adam Bellows’ two-run homer.

But the Bulldogs came back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on Carlson’s run-scoring single and Brad Welker’s sacrifice fly. Those runs proved crucial as the Gaels scored twice in the ninth against starter Erick Dworkis (8-4) before reliever John Gonzalez came in to cut short the rally and pick up his fourth save.

Jeff Culpepper went 4 for 5 for the Bulldogs while Carlson had three hits and five RBIs.

The teams play again today at noon and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Avista.

Basketball

Kyle Weaver has signed a letter of intent to play at Washington State University next fall, men’s coach Dick Bennett announced.

Weaver attends Beloit (Wis.) Memorial High School. The 6-foot-5, 180-pound guard averaged 18.1 points as a senior and was named first team all-state by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel as well as first team all-conference and second team all-state by the Associated Press.

“He is an extremely skilled perimeter player with the versatility to play all three positions,” said Bennett.

Softball

Aimee Minor broke a 3-3 tie in the third inning with an RBI fielder’s choice and Washington held on to defeated Arizona State (33-29, 3-15) 6-3 at Husky Softball Stadium in Seattle.

The Huskies are 36-15 overall, 10-8 in conference.
