Aviation society honors WWII hero Gumm

The Rogers High School Air Force Junior ROTC will host its fourth annual Military Ball at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Rogers Field House. During this formal event, the Corps of Cadets will hold its first induction ceremony of the Kitty Hawk Air Society, an honor society for AFJROTC Cadets. This particular chapter is being named after Lt. Charles F. Gumm Jr., a Rogers graduate.

Gumm gave his life saving the village of Nayland, England, during World War II when his aircraft malfunctioned. Instead of parachuting to safety he stayed with the plane, ensuring it didn’t crash into the village.

The ceremony will consist of naming and inducting the chapter’s charter members and the induction of honorary members. The charter members’ names are secret at this time, however, those who will be inducted as honorary members are Brian Benzel, superintendent of Spokane Public Schools; Wallace Williams, principal, Rogers High School; Col. Don Oukrop, senior aerospace science instructor, Rogers AFJROTC; and MSgt. William “Lloyd” Patton, aerospace science instructor, Rogers AFJROTC.

Developmental Olympics at Mead

Mead School District’s Developmental Learning Center programs will be holding the third annual Developmental Olympics on June 3. Approximately 100 students-athletes with disabilities from kindergarten through high school will participate in a variety of track and field related events at Whitworth College. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 10:15 a.m., with closing ceremonies at 1:15 p.m. Family, friends and the community are welcome to attend.

Home school programs

The Home School Program offers two opportunities for the 2004-2005 school year.

•Home School Club: A weekly class day of fun, hands-on learning and connection with fellow homeschoolers in grades three through eight. Classes will be offered in creative writing, hands-on science, world geography, and fitness. There will also be nine-week units in music, art, drama, and foreign language. There may also be opportunities for Knowledge Bowl, Spelling Bee and Geography Bee participation. The cost is $600 for the school year.

•Distance Learning Classes: Individualized computer courses for grades 3 through 12, that link the student to a live teacher via the Internet. The curriculum is interactive, with video and audio chips, games, and teacher-student message capabilities. Courses are offered in science, history, math, language arts and Bible. The cost is $295 per subject.

The Home School Club classes are designed to correspond with the Distance Learning curriculum. Students can participate in one or both programs.
