Eddie ended up making … well, a donkey of himself

The stars of “Shrek 2” mostly recorded their scenes at different times, so their appearance at the Cannes Film Festival was a rare get-together.

Working alone in a soundbooth had its advantages, said Mike Myers, who provided the voice of the gentle green giant.

“The nicest thing is, I can come (to work) and I don’t have to shower,” he quipped.

Added Cameron Diaz, who plays Shrek’s green-skinned bride, Princess Fiona: “There’s a sort of freedom in just making faces that will never be seen.”

But sometimes somebody does see those facial expressions, said Eddie Murphy, who plays Shrek’s garrulous sidekick, Donkey.

“When you’re doing the voiceover sessions, they’ll have a video camera recording what you’re doing and the animators will take a gesture or a facial expression and they’ll kind of add that,” he said. “It’s scary. … Every now and then the donkey will make a face or something like I do.”

Man of steel, meet master of domain

Jerry Seinfeld and Superman are together again for another adventure.

The comedian and the superhero are co-starring in a second short, online film, titled “Hindsight Is 20/20,” which premiered Thursday afternoon. It’s available on the American Express Web site ( www.americanexpress.com/jerry) alongside the first short they did together, “A Uniform Used to Mean Something,” which debuted in March.

Another cat tale nipped in the bud

PETA is pulling in its claws when it comes to “Catwoman” star Halle Berry.

In the upcoming film, Berry rescues felines from a product-testing laboratory — which struck animal-rights types as ironic, since she’s also a makeup pitchwoman, and cosmetics companies routinely test on animals.

“We’ve been swamped with calls and e-mails from people saying, ‘Go after Halle Berry! She’s a hypocrite!’ ” said an insider at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. “But we did some research, and it turns out she only pitches for Revlon, which has stopped all its animal testing. So now Halle’s become our cover girl. We’re putting her on the cover of our cruelty-cosmetics brochure. She’s our kind of superhero.”

Who knew the ‘P.’ stood for perfume?

Rapper Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, who’s already expanded his horizons by starring in a Broadway revival of “Raisin in the Sun,” is moving into cosmetics. Estee Lauder is planning to create and market a new line of fragrances under his Sean John name.

“People express themselves in many ways — through their music, through the way they dress, and also through the fragrance they choose, so deciding to make a fragrance was very natural for me,” Combs said.

Hey, once you’ve tried it, you can’t beat it

The latest bit of bizarre Michael Jackson news: Former child star Macaulay Culkin‘s father, Kit, says in an upcoming book that he once discovered his 2-year-old son Rory sitting on the floor with Jackson — both of them sucking on baby bottles.

Jackson “did manage to glance up at me, before sheepishly shrugging and returning to this bottle-sucking business,” Culkin writes. “And, I should perhaps here note, that it was not one of my son’s bottles that he was so busy with, leading me to surmise that he had a collection of his own.”
