Colville, Pullman off to state; Indians win District 7 2A title
Stephanie Day (7-2) pitched a one-hitter and struck out four Monday as Colville defeated Pullman 4-2 in the championship game of the District 7 2A softball tournament at Medical Lake.
Whitney Kaiser, who went 2 for 4, and Whitney Loan (2 for 2) both had run-scoring singles for the Indians during a three-run second inning.
Colville (17-2) earned the No. 1 seed to the state tournament, which begins Friday at Wenatchee’s Walla Walla Point Park. Colville will open against Hoquiam.
Also at the tournament, Kelly Thornton struck out 10 and pinch-runner Alyssa Garro scored from second base on a sixth-inning throwing error as Pullman (17-5) earned the second and final seed to state with a 3-2 win over Riverside (13-9). The Greyhounds’ opener is against Connell.
Colville began the day with a 5-0 win over Riverside as Melissa Rice (12-1) pitched a one-hitter and struck out 13. Rice also went 2 for 4 with an RBI… . ML started the day with a 9-6 win that knocked out Lakeside (10-10). • Liz Beardslee had a two-run single and a sacrifice fly during a seven-run fifth, and Kettle Falls (22-2) defeated Freeman 17-6 in six innings in the 1A regional championship game at Moses Lake. Both teams qualified for the state tournament that begins Friday, also at Moses Lake. KF will open against Goldendale, Freeman against Cle Elum… . KF clinched its state berth with an 11-3 win over Liberty Bell. Cassie Schernitzki pitched a five-hitter, struck out four and drove in two runs… . Melissa Triber and Katie Lamon of the Scotties were a combined 4 for 8 with seven RBIs… . Jessica Stine and Katie Burns had two-run singles during a five-run seventh as Colfax (16-9) earned the final state berth with a 9-6 win over Okanogan. Sarah Hardy went 3 for 4 and reliever Lynnea Vantrease allowed three hits in five innings for the Bulldogs. Colfax qualified for its first state tourney in approximately 20 years of playing softball.
