Welliver comes back to Worley for big bout
WORLEY, Idaho – Spokane welterweight Dewey Welliver fights at home for the first time in more than 18 months when he meets former world champion Vince Phillips tonight in the main event of a boxing card at the Coeur d’Alene Casino’s House of Fury.
Welliver (15-10-1, four knockouts) last fought in Worley in February 2003, beating former world champion Livingstone Bramble in his final professional fight.
Since his last hometown fight, Welliver has won two of nine fights, many of which were accepted on short notice and in the hometown of his opponent.
Welliver again faces a former world champion in the main event.
Phillips (45-8-1, 33 KOs), 41, is a former International Boxing Federation light welterweight champion.
Last year he lost to undefeated World Boxing Union light welterweight champion Ricky Hatton in a bout in Manchester, England.
In a co-main event, Spokane’s Luke Munsen faces Canadian Peter O’Kane (14-4-1, four KOs).
Munsen (16-3, 11 KOs) looks to snap a two-bout losing streak.
In August he was knocked out by “King” Arthur Williams in the main event at the Coeur d’Alene Casino.
In July he lost a unanimous decision to Chad Van Sickle in Tacoma for the vacant World Boxing Council’s Continental Americas cruiserweight title.
